Are iron infusions right for you? 🤔
An iron infusion is where iron is given directly into your bloodstream, via a vein, bypassing the gut. This helps to more quickly restore your body’s iron levels compared with oral tablets or liquid supplements.
Iron is essential to your body as it needs iron to make haemoglobin in red blood cells, which carries oxygen around your body. Without enough iron, your organs and tissues don’t get enough oxygen. Low iron can lead to fatigue, weakness, low energy, and sometimes pale skin or dizziness.
Your doctor may suggest an iron infusion for a number of reasons. This includes if iron tablets or liquid don’t work or cause side-effects, or your body isn’t absorbing oral iron properly (e.g. due to gut issues). They also may suggest an infusion if you need to quickly replenish iron (e.g. before surgery or late in pregnancy) or if oral iron isn’t suitable (e.g. certain chronic conditions).
During an infusion, a doctor inserts a small needle into a vein (often in your arm or hand). The iron solution is then slowly dripped into your bloodstream. Depending on the formulation and dosage, the infusion can take from 15 minutes up to a few hours. After the infusion, you’ll be monitored for 15–30 minutes to make sure there’s no reaction.
Many people begin to notice increased energy, less fatigue or better overall well-being within a few days to a week after their iron infusion. Full restoration of iron stores and red blood cell health may take several weeks, depending on your initial iron levels and overall health.
Though Iron infusions treat iron deficiency, they don’t replace investigating why iron was low in the first place (e.g. diet, bleeding, absorption issues, chronic illness). You need to always follow an infusion up with blood tests to check your iron levels! 🩸
If you think you may have low iron or want to discuss whether an infusion is right for you, book an appointment with the Women’s Health GP today! 🫶🏽

The importance of Cervical Screening Test (CST) 🫶🏽🫶🏽
Cervical screening is one of the most effective ways to prevent cervical cancer.
The Cervical Screening Test checks for HPV, a virus that can cause changes in cervical cells. These changes can lead to cervical cancer if not detected early. The CST replaced the Pap test and is more accurate, with screening recommended every five years.
Why Screening Matters:
Cervical cancer is highly preventable. Most cases occur in people who have never screened or don’t screen regularly. The CST detects HPV early so any changes can be monitored or treated before they become serious.
Who Should Get Screened?
Anyone aged 25 to 74 with a cervix who has ever been s*xually active should have regular CSTs, even if you have no symptoms, have had the HPV vaccine, or however you identify. The vaccine doesn’t cover all HPV types, so screening is still essential.
When to See a Doctor:
Speak with your doctor if you’ve had a hysterectomy, are over 75 and unsure about screening, or have symptoms like abnormal bleeding, pain during s*x, or unusual discharge. These need assessment even though they don’t always mean something serious.
Where to Get a CST/
CSTs are available to do here at the clinic.
The test is quick and usually not painful. A clinician gently inserts a speculum to view the cervix and collects a small sample with a swab. The process takes only a few minutes. Tell your Doctor if anything feels uncomfortable.
Self-Collection Option:
You may be able to collect your own sample using a small vaginal swab for 10–30 seconds. Self-collection isn’t suitable if you have unusual bleeding, pain, or abnormal discharge.
We’re here to support you, answer your questions, and make the experience as comfortable as possible. Your health matters, and early detection saves live! ❤️🔥

The importance of regular skin checks! 💖
Summer is almost here (though it doesn’t feel like it 😢) and so is peak UV season.🌤️
Australia has some of the highest skin cancer rates in the world. Though, the good news, is that most skin cancers are completely treatable when caught early. ☀️
A skin check is quick, non-invasive, painless and could save your life. Your doctor uses a dermatoscope to assess moles, spots and changes you might not notice at home, including areas like your scalp, back and behind your ears. 👏🏽
If you’ve noticed a new spot, a change in a mole, or if it’s been more than 12 months since your last check, now is the time. Early detection leads to much better outcomes. 🙌🏽
Skin checks at Women’s Health Plus are available with the Women’s Health GP and Cosmetic Doctor, Dr Chou Ky. 👩⚕️
Make sure to prioritise your skin. A skin check today can prevent major issues tomorrow! 🫶🏽
