It’s been 3 years since I last visited Hawai’i. I said farewell to Kumu Dane who is my source of Lomilomi. Time flies…
It is very important to have connection with the island and its people, make effort keeping it alive to be authentic. By doing so you can be in touch with true “ traditional” Hawaiian healing art Lomilomi.
And yes, learning never ends!

The story behind Hōkūleʻa ( Star of Gladness ).
Mau Piailug wasn’t supposed to exist. Scholars said his art was dead. Then he sailed 2,500 miles—without maps, without instruments, using only stars his ancestors left him.
This was Mau Piailug, a master navigator from the Micronesian island of Satawal. In 1976, he accepted a significant challenge that would echo through history.
He agreed to guide the Hawaiian voyaging canoe, Hōkūleʻa, on a landmark journey from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti, a distance of about 2,500 nautical miles.
Piailug navigated without any modern instruments. He relied solely on traditional wayfinding methods passed down through generations but largely discounted by many in the modern world.
He used his profound knowledge of the stars, the patterns of ocean swells, the direction of the winds, and even the flight paths of birds to chart their course across the vast Pacific.
For many decades, these sophisticated Polynesian and Micronesian navigation techniques were considered lost arts, almost erased by colonization and the dominance of Western technology.
Yet, these very skills had enabled Pacific Islanders to explore and settle one of the largest areas of the globe, a testament to their incredible maritime capabilities dating back to around 1300 AD and earlier.
The 1976 voyage of the Hōkūleʻa was far more than just a successful sea journey; it was a powerful act of cultural revival.
It clearly demonstrated to the world that these ancestral navigation systems were not only historically significant but remained remarkably effective and deeply vital to Pacific cultures.
Piailug’s guidance and the Hōkūleʻa’s success ignited a renaissance in traditional voyaging and celestial navigation across Polynesia and beyond, inspiring a new generation

“Healing is 80% Mana, and 20% Aloha” - Kumu lomi Dane Kaohelani Silva
Lomilomi is a distinctly Hawaiian form of traditional therapy. The fundamental knowledge was brought to Hawai’i over 1,000 years ago by the Polynesian people before passing down through generations of Hawaiian families to evolve into this healing art. It realigns the body, releases energy blockages and heals and restores a sense of wellbeing within oneself.
My Kumu (guide instructor), Dane Kaohelani Silva is a native Hawaiian and has a traditional lineage of many generations. He is the first chairman of Hawaiian Lomilomi Association. Hawaiian health philosophy teaches us that Akua ( creator), Kanaka ( humans) and ‘ Aina ( nature) are all interconnected. When they are Lokahi ( in balance) Mana( spiritual healing energy) is enhanced. Lomilomi starts with a P**e( prayer) to connect each element. Nature is harnessed in treatments by using heated stones, plant based therapeutic oil and touch. Kumu teaches us “More mana more healing. No mana no healing”.
Lokahi lomolomi methods and techniques originate from Lua ( Hawaiian martial art). They treat muscle/skeletal frame and stimulate the nerve system. Lokahi lomilomi practitioners tailor each session based on your needs. Muscle tension is released by applying different pressures using palms and forearms. Joint movement is restored to frozen joints through dynamic stretching techniques. The aim of your tailored consultation is to bring you back to PONO - the state of balance between body, mind and spirit.
May 2018, after 6 years of study Lokahi Lomilomi under Kumu Dane, I am certified as an first instructor in South Australia. I hope this healing art will reach as many people as possible...
