Wound Insight πŸ’‘
Nutrition plays an important role in wound healing.

When the body is trying to repair damaged tissue, it requires additional energy, protein and key nutrients to support the healing process.

Some of the nutrients that help support wound healing include:
β€’ Protein
β€’ Vitamin C
β€’ Zinc
β€’ Adequate hydration

If nutrition is compromised, wound healing may slow and the risk of complications can increase.

Supporting good nutrition is an important part of effective wound care.

Recognising Early Signs of Wound Infection

Early recognition of wound infection can make a significant difference to healing outcomes.

Some signs carers and support workers should watch for include:

β€’ Increasing redness around the wound
β€’ Swelling or warmth
β€’ Increased pain or tenderness
β€’ Unusual odour
β€’ Changes in wound drainage

If a wound begins to change or deteriorate, early clinical assessment is important.

Wound Innovations supports patients, carers and healthcare teams with evidence-based wound management across Australia.

Meet Jan, Stomal Therapy and Wound Care Specialist at Wound Innovations, supporting patients and care teams across Queensland.

Jan brings more than 20 years of experience in Stomal Therapy and Wound Care. She completed her Graduate Certificate in Stomal Therapy Nursing in 2001 after already spending 19 years in acute nursing settings. Much of her early career was in paediatrics, caring for premature babies through to teenagers with complex stoma, wound and continence needs. This experience shaped her compassionate, highly skilled and patient centred approach to care.

Following significant organisational change within the health sector, Jan broadened her expertise in a public sector adult acute hospital while continuing to support paediatric services. More recently, she transitioned into community based Stomal Therapy nursing, where she continues to make a meaningful difference for patients and care teams.

Throughout her career, Jan has supported people of all ages requiring stoma care or living with complex wounds, including vascular, diabetic and surgical wounds, pressure injuries and fistulae.

Jan is deeply committed to delivering exceptional, person centred care that improves quality of life. She is a strong advocate for optimising health outcomes through education, collaboration and holistic support for patients, families and multidisciplinary teams.

For Jan, the most rewarding part of her role is seeing patients grow in confidence, wounds progress toward healing, stoma challenges resolve and knowing she has shared knowledge that empowers others.

Did you know?

Pressure injuries affect approximately 1 in 10 patients in healthcare settings worldwide.

Many of these injuries can be prevented through early intervention, regular skin assessments and appropriate pressure management.

Simple actions such as repositioning, monitoring skin integrity and maintaining hydration can significantly reduce risk.

Raising awareness helps protect vulnerable patients and supports better outcomes across healthcare and aged care environments.

Meet Nicole Jones, Stomal Therapist and Specialist Wound Nurse at Wound Innovations, supporting patients and care teams across Adelaide.

Nicole began her career in wound care more than 13 years ago on the vascular ward at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was mentored by one of South Australia’s senior vascular nurse practitioners. This early experience built a strong clinical foundation and sparked her ongoing passion for complex wound management.

Following her postgraduate training, she expanded her scope of practice to include stoma siting, patient counselling, pre and post operative care, and advanced wound management.

Nicole has been part of the Wound Innovations team for the past two and a half years and greatly values both the practical and educational aspects of her role. She finds it especially rewarding when clinical knowledge truly clicks for nursing teams, those moments that build confidence, capability and stronger wound care practices.

Seeing wound healing progress and sharing in the excitement of positive outcomes with facility staff continues to drive Nicole each day. She takes great pride in knowing her expertise helps strengthen clinical practice and improve patient care across the community.

Wound Insight Tuesday πŸ’‘

Redness does not always mean infection.

Erythema may be caused by a range of factors including friction, excess moisture, sustained pressure or sensitivity to adhesive products.

Accurate wound assessment requires evaluation of the full clinical picture rather than relying on a single isolated sign. Consider wound history, exudate levels, temperature changes, pain, systemic symptoms and contributing environmental factors before determining appropriate management.

Taking a structured and evidence based approach supports timely and appropriate clinical decisions.

When Should You Refer?

Not every wound needs specialist care. But some absolutely do.

Here are 4 signs it may be time to refer:
β€’ The wound has not improved in 2 weeks
β€’ There are repeated breakdowns
β€’ There are signs of infection
β€’ Dressing plans are not achieving progress

Early intervention can prevent complications and hospitalisation.

If you are unsure whether a referral is appropriate, we are always happy to guide you. Message or send us an email to discuss a case or referral pathway.
