Whooping cough cases are at a 35-year high in Australia

Tens of thousands of cases have been recorded across 2024–2025, with Queensland among the most affected states.

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can cause severe coughing fits lasting weeks and is especially dangerous for babies and young children.

Vaccination is the best protection
- Recommended during every pregnancy to protect newborns
- Important for adults — boosters are advised every 10 years
