Today I reflect with immense sadness on the trauma inflicted upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities.

This week at the Speech Pathology Conference I was powerfully reminded by those with lived experience, that historical injustice is still an ongoing source of intergenerational trauma for Aboriginal and Torres Islander families, communities, and peoples.

We cannot begin to right injustice and heal as a nation without accepting the full truth of our history as uncomfortable as it may be. All Australians need to be involved in the healing process.

Commit to ACTION.
Acknowledge and respect STRENGTHS – of culture, spirit, and status of First Nations peoples.
Tell the TRUTH.
Do no more HARM.
End RACISM.

Starting the New Year with a First Aid and CPR refresher. Highly recommend Fluid First Aid!! The course was so practical and engaging. I left feeling competent and confident. And… I managed to persuade my teenagers that first aid is an essential life skill. Pretty proud they took me up on the offer and received their certification too

Just going though videos on my phone and found this one of my youngest, aged 5, road-testing the Letter-Sounds Pro 1 app. Feeling so nostalgic! He’s so little ❤️

I had been training in synthetic phonics approaches to teaching literacy and he was my little guinea pig (that’s what happens when you have a Speechie mum 😉).

Research provides conclusive evidence that children who are strong readers are skilled in using letter-sound knowledge to learn new words when reading. Skilled readers are good at understanding that words are made up of speech sounds and they are also good at understanding how these speech sounds are represented by letters. This knowledge helps children to decode written language and teach themselves new words.

Now I love helping students who struggle with literacy. It’s one of my favourite parts of my job!

Saw this and related! From one busy mama to another - If the house is a bomb after a long week & there’s still a lot on your ‘to do’ list, remind yourself of this. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad parent… on the contrary. It means your house is a home and your kids are busy!! Be kind to yourself! And make this your new mantra… Connection not Perfection! Thanks for the reminder Maggie Dent ❤️

I love love love using books for therapy!! This one is so simple but so engaging -
‘Rosie’s Walk’ by Pat Hutchins

From one simple book with very few words and a few rudimentary props 😆 we have managed to target:

1. Prepositions: Rosie walks across the yard, around the pond, over the haystack, past the mill, through the fence, under the beehives and, into her henhouse. The sneaky fox hides under the hen house, goes in the water, ends up beneath the flour, over the fence, and crashes into the beehives.

2. Vocabulary including Tier 2 words such as ‘cunning’ and ‘outsmart.

3. Speech sounds - f: We talked about - fox, frog, fall, fast, flour, fence, furious (bee), and (the fox runs) far, far away. We also targeted ‘r’ and ‘r’ blends - Rosie, across, around, (the fox is) out of control, crash, and run away.

…and we have had a tonne of fun with sensory play and role-playing.
