💬 Social media changes – here’s what you need to know
You might have seen some news about a social media “ban” or delay for young people under 16. It’s normal to feel a bit confused, worried or even frustrated about what it might mean — so here’s a quick summary of the facts 👇
🌱 What’s happening
From 10 December 2025, new rules will mean that most social media platforms won’t allow Australians under 16 to create or keep accounts.
These changes are part of a plan to help make online spaces safer for young people.
💡 What’s not changing
➡️Some services — like Messenger, WhatsApp, Discord, Roblox, Steam, Google Classroom, LEGO Play and YouTube Kids — are currently exempt from the ban.
➡️You won’t be asked to show ID or use a government digital ID to prove your age.
➡️It’s up to the platforms to follow the rules — not you or your family.
💚 If you’re feeling unsure
Change can feel big, especially when it’s something that affects how you connect with friends or express yourself. You don’t have to figure it out alone — the team at headspace Albany is here to chat about what this means for you, how you’re feeling, or ways to stay connected offline.
