I see people introduce themselves on here quite a bit and I always enjoy reading those posts, so here’s me!

I’m Ciara and I’m nearly 44 years old (November birthday, classic extroverted Sagittarius, don’t hold it against me!). I’ve been a dietitian for almost 17 years and I’ve always focused on children and families in my work. Before I became a dietitian I studied to become an opera singer! I love to sing 😊

I am a solo mum to two little girls, aged 5 and 2. Experiencing the feeding journey for myself has been incredibly educational. My oldest is quite a selective eater and has clear sensory sensitivities. My youngest was very slow to warm to food and still won’t really eat at daycare but at home will request bowls of Kalamata olives and capers! Go figure 🤷‍♀️

I love to work with lots of different kinds of patients (especially those fussy eaters!), and I’m always so grateful to the parents that take a chance and decide to work with me to improve their child’s mealtime experiences and their nutrition. I focus on building trust and safety in the feeding relationship and helping everyone stand down from battle positions at mealtime.

If you’re interested in coming to see me, I’m in clinic on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and I have space for a few new clients. You can call our wonderful admin assistant Anna on 0408 987 427 to book in.

We recently had the pleasure of working with Marcella from to capture some lovely snaps of our team ❤️ Marcella is so delightful, I highly recommend her!

From left to right, this is Ciara (me), Brydie and Jodie. We’re your local extremely friendly and definitely not food-police dietitians 😊

We would love to see you in clinic or via telehealth to support with any and all of your nutritional concerns and questions. We see patients privately and via NDIS funding, from birth to old age 🩷

You can book via our lovely admin assistant Anna on 0408 987 427 or email her at admin@nurturednd.com.au

This is the amazing Gabby. We love her dearly. She’s decided to step back from her work with Nurtured for now and we’re really going to miss her! Thank you so much Gabby for the thoughtful, caring, expert and deeply ethical presence you have brought to our practice and to the families we work with.

Much love from your team at Nurtured ❤️

We recently farewelled the wonderful Vivienne from her role as our admin assistant. Vivienne has been a key staff member of Nurtured ND for the past few years, and if you’ve rung us up during that time it’s very likely you’ve chatted to her. As well as her admin and finance duties she has been head cheerleader, fixer of problems, booster of morale and wrangler of technological issues.

Vivienne is one of the most diligent, hard working, kind, warm and conscientious people you could ever hope to meet and we are so grateful to her for all of her hard work. She also happens to be my amazing mum and Mémé to my girls ❤️

Vivienne will continue doing some finance work for Nurtured ND, but is handing over the admin reins to Anna who we are also very lucky to have! Give Anna a big welcome and hello if you happen to call in the next while.

First foods - what to offer?
We haven’t started solids yet - the closer we get, the happier I feel to just wait it out until the 6 month mark. There is no advantage to starting earlier than 6 months.
At 6 months, the crucial nutrient, and the one that makes it very necessary to start solids, is iron. Babies are born with some iron stores from in utero, which start to run a bit low at this point, and breastmilk/formula no longer has enough iron to meet their needs. So, there should be an emphasis on iron-rich foods as early as possible.

That said, a lot of people start with puréed or finger food fruit and veg just to get baby going on the whole idea of eating and I think that’s great. If you can also use some iron-fortified cereal mixed in, that’s a good idea (although some babies hate the stuff, and I can’t blame them!). Just make sure you crack on with good sources of iron as early as you can (best bet is red meat, but there are other options too - I’ll do a more detailed post on iron-containing foods soon).

From our families to yours, we at Nurtured Nutrition wish you a very Merry Christmas and a restful, peaceful break (best of luck achieving that if you’ve got kids 🤪🤯 Reach for the sky, I say!).

Thank you so much to everyone who has engaged with our business this year. We have so many beautiful families and individuals accessing our service and we’re grateful to all of you for choosing us to support you.

It has been a huge year for us. I’m so grateful to my brilliant team - Gabby, Jodie, Brydie and Vivienne, who have worked extremely hard and continued to provide a fantastic service to our community throughout 2023. I’m really looking forward to 2024. Life will get a little more complex as I recommence work as a solo parent with two kids now, but it’s good to keep things spicy isn’t it!

I could rattle on for ages, but I’ll finish up by saying - enjoy all of the wonderful festive food and don’t waste a second feeling guilty about it.

Merry Christmas to you all!

Theodora is 3 months old today!

A big shout out to our wonderful admin assistant Vivienne, and fabulous dietitians Brydie, Jodie and Gabby, who have been keeping the ship afloat while I’ve been a bit distracted!

We’re so glad to be able to continue to provide quality dietetic care, in a weight neutral framework, with lots of love and empathy.

Welcome to the newest member of the Nurtured ND family, Theodora ❤️

Some changes afoot at Nurtured Nutrition and Dietetics!

Sybby and I are expecting the arrival of her little sister quite soon 😊 We are very excited. This means I’m off on maternity leave from July for a little while. I’ll still be involved in running the business but Brydie, Gabby and Jodie will be continuing to do an amazing job of the face to face clinical work at Nurtured.

You can book in to see an adult or paediatric dietitian by calling 0408 987 427 or emailing admin@nurturednd.com.au

We hear this question frequently from our community of parents. We have all grown up in an age of diet culture, have seen the effects that it can have on the way we think feel and act around food - and want to do things differently with our kids. Makes sense!

There are a lot of things we can do to foster a positive relationship with food for kids (and we promise to share more tips along the way)

But our number one tip is to be a positive role model! Examine your own relationship with food, work on it if you need and be a positive example to your family. This can come through in comments we make about food, rules we create around food for ourselves, or the way we speak about our body (and more).

As a starting point, check out our previous post explaining what healthy and unhealthy relationships with food look like and follow along for practical everyday tips.
