We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. Albury Wodonga Health is a cross-border health service who provides a comprehensive and growing range of health services to the communities of Southern New South Wales and Northeast Victoria. Since our establishment in 2009, we have continued to evolve and bring more services closer to home for over 300,000 people. We have 24 sites across Albury, Wodonga, Beechworth, and Wangaratta, which enable us to deliver access to high-quality, safe and connected health care right here on the Border.

⭐ RDN Cadet Spotlight: Dr Chris Henry ⭐

As we welcomed RDN Cadets to Albury Wodonga last weekend, we’re proud to spotlight one of our own — Dr Chris Henry, now a Stage 3 Psychiatry Registrar at AWH and RANZCP Rural Champion.

👉 What first attracted you to the RDN Cadet program?
“Growing up in a rural community, I saw firsthand the ‘stoic silence’ that often surrounds mental health and the genuine struggle families face when specialist care is hours away. I didn’t want to be a doctor who just looked at rural health from a textbook — I wanted to be part of the solution. The RDN Cadet program was the perfect bridge – it recognised that coming from the bush gives you a 'cultural shorthand' with rural patients that you just can't teach in a city lecture theatre."

👉 What surprised you most about training at AWH?
"The clinical intensity. There’s a misconception that rural medicine is slower, but at Albury Wodonga Health, the acuity is high and the pathology is complex. What surprised me most was how my rural background actually became a clinical tool. In the High Dependency Unit, being an Indigenous male who understands the nuances of regional life allowed me to build rapport quickly. AWH provides the high-tech, fast-paced environment of a major hospital but maintains that 'small town' sense of accountability to the person sitting across from you."

👉 What’s been your biggest professional growth moment?
"Transitioning into my Stage 3 Registrar year and taking on the role of RANZCP Rural Champion. There was a specific moment managing a complex dual-diagnosis case where the clinical, legal and social issues were completely intertwined. Realising I had the seniority to advocate for a management plan that actually fit the patient's rural reality, rather than a 'one-size-fits-all' metro model, was a major milestone. It was the moment I stopped being a trainee and started being a specialist advocate for my community."

👉 What do you love most about living and working in Albury Wodonga?
"It’s the sense of belonging. After years of training, being back in a regional environment feels like coming home. I love that I can provide high-level psychiatric care to my community during the day, and be out on the Murray River or in the High Country by sunset. For an Indigenous man in a high-pressure specialty, that connection to Country isn't just a perk — it’s essential for my own wellbeing and my ability to show up for my patients every day."

👉 What would you say to medical students considering a rural pathway?
"If you're from a rural background, you have a superpower – don't trade it for a city postcode. To all students, but especially my Indigenous brothers and sisters: The bush is where you are needed most, and it’s where you will grow the fastest. In a regional setting like AWH, you aren't just a number in a rotation; you are a leader. You’ll develop a level of clinical 'grit' and a broad scope of practice that will make you a far more versatile psychiatrist in the long run."

World-class Cath Lab training, right here.

In February, AWH staff across the Cath Lab, Anaesthetics and ICU had specialist emergency training never before delivered locally, matching the level of education typically seen in Australia’s largest tertiary hospitals.

Delivered by Cardiac Advanced Resuscitation Education (C.A.R.E.), the 2-day training focused on high-risk emergency scenarios unique to the Cath Lab environment, with hands-on simulation taking place inside our own Cath Lab.

For regional teams caring for increasingly complex patients, this kind of training is essential.

It means our teams are better prepared for the moments that matter most – delivering safer, faster care for our community, close to home. 💙

⭐ Welcoming the rural doctors of tomorrow to Albury Wodonga ⭐

This weekend, Albury Wodonga Health was proud to host the first of the 2026 NSW Rural Doctors Network (RDN) Cadet rural visits.

Supported by the NSW Rural Doctors Network on behalf of the NSW Ministry of Health, RDN Cadets commit to undertaking two of their first three years of hospital training in an eligible rural NSW hospital as part of their return of service. AWH is one of just six sites in NSW where cadets can complete this training, alongside Wagga Wagga, Tamworth, Orange, Dubbo and Broken Hill.

Their visit to Albury included:
👉 A cultural immersion at the Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk
👉 Joining our local Parkrun community for a 5km run/walk
👉 A tour and careers discussions at our Albury Campus
👉 Connecting with our doctors and senior clinicians across psychiatry, anaesthetics, general surgery and rural generalism
👉 Q&A with our current Juniors

In 2026, AWH is supporting 13 RDN cadets through our prevocational training program. We’re proud that several have chosen to stay on for vocational training in our region – and honestly, once you experience Albury Wodonga, it’s not hard to see why!

These weekends are about more than information sessions. They’re about connection to community, to culture, and to the possibilities of building a meaningful medical career in regional Australia.

We’re delighted to welcome the cadets and showcase not just our hospital, but our vibrant community and lifestyle.

⭐ We Are Stronger Together! ⭐

SS&A City2City is back and what a return!

In its first year back, more than 3000 runners and walkers came together to raise an incredible $154,292 for local health care at Albury Wodonga Health.

Funds raised will support Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy services, helping patients recover, regain independence and maintain mobility and wellbeing. They will also directly fund the $10,000 professional development scholarship for Allied Health staff honouring the legacy of Dr Lucie Shanahan.

A special thank you to our naming rights partner SS&A Albury, major sponsors World Gym, Flexout Health Albury-Wodonga & NE Victoria, Tonkin Group, and Riverina Podiatry Group & Sports Podiatry Centre, and all our generous local sponsors and supporters who helped bring this event to life.

A huge thank you to our volunteers who made the day run so smoothly – and did it all with a smile.

To our organising team and co-chairs Anthea and Sadie - thank you for making it happen.

And a huge thank you to everyone who ran, walked, cheered and supported! 🙏

We can’t wait to do it all again next year!

There is an increased risk of measles in Victoria, especially in metropolitan Melbourne. Local transmission has occurred in Melbourne among people with no recent overseas travel or known public exposure.

Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and others.

Anyone who develops symptoms should seek medical care and testing for measles. Call the health service beforehand to advise that you may have been exposed to measles and wear a face mask.

The public exposure sites web page will be updated on an ongoing basis as new sites are identified: https://go.vic.gov.au/4aGYlde

Today, the 21st February, is Mental Health Nurses Day. On this day, we honour the work of every one of our incredible staff members for showing up with care and professionalism each day. Here's a message from Matthew, our Director of Nursing - Mental Health & Wellbeing:

"I wanted to take a moment to pause and extend a sincere thank you to each and every one of you. The work you do is unique. It requires a rare blend of clinical expertise, deep emotional intelligence, and unwavering resilience. Whether you are navigating a crisis, providing a listening ear, or advocating for those who feel they’ve lost their voice, your impact is profound.

I am constantly inspired by:
Your Compassion: The way you hold space for patients on their most difficult days.
Your Skill: Your ability to manage complex care with grace and professionalism.
Your Dedication: The tireless energy you bring to reducing stigma and promoting recovery.
Take a moment today to be proud of the vital role you play. We are incredibly lucky to have you on our team."

It's important to take days like Mental Health Nurses Day to encourage open conversations in our community around mental health. If you're feeling overwhelmed, please know that there are resources available to help you improve your mental health and wellbeing.
