Eating disorders don't just impact adolescents - anyone, of any age can be affected. In this article for June Alexander's The Diary Healer, Nancy shares her experience of living with an eating disorder for most of her life. After finally being diagnosed at age 65, Nancy was able to access the treatment she needed to recover.

Nancy says " the eating disorder dug in and became louder and more tenacious than at any other time in my life" after perimenopause resulted in hormonal weight gain.
Nancy believes that had her health professional explained that weight gain during menopause is normal, she might have developed a new respect for her body instead of fearing and hating it. Instead, Nancy maintained a low weight to appear younger, which was only reinforced by praise from her doctors, family and friends.
Recovering from her eating disorder allowed Nancy to feel empowered, strong and able to dismiss the societal fear of ageing - now she focuses on the values that really matter to her.
