What is an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram—often called an echo—uses ultrasound (sound waves) to create moving images of your heart. These images allow your cardiologist to assess:
Heart muscle and pumping function
Heart valves, Major blood vessels, Blood flow through the heart, Pressures within the heart and lungs.
An echocardiogram is completely safe. It does not involve radiation or X-rays.
What to Expect
An echo is a non-invasive and generally comfortable test that takes up to 45 minutes.
During the test:
You will be asked to lie on your left side on an examination bed.
A cardiac sonographer will place small ECG electrodes on your chest to monitor your heart rhythm during the procedure.
A cool gel will be applied to your chest. This helps the ultrasound probe (transducer) capture clear images.
The sonographer will gently move the transducer across the left side of your chest, applying firm pressure as needed.
You may be asked to briefly hold your breath at times.
