🌸 International Women’s Day – Let’s Talk About Pelvic Health 🌸

Women’s health is an important part of overall wellbeing, yet many topics are still not talked about enough — including pelvic floor health.

Research suggests that many women are unsure if they are performing pelvic floor exercises correctly without professional guidance. At the same time, urinary incontinence affects a significant number of women, with estimates suggesting around 1 in 3 women who have had a baby experience bladder leakage at some stage of their life.

Pelvic floor muscles play an important role in bladder control, pelvic organ support, and core stability, and concerns can affect women at many different stages of life.

This International Women’s Day, we encourage open conversations about pelvic health and the importance of seeking appropriate professional advice when needed.

At Red Centre Health Focus, our team takes a holistic approach to women’s health, supporting women in Alice Springs with education, movement-based care, and personalised physiotherapy. We are passionate about helping improve access to pelvic health awareness and care within our community.

If you have questions about pelvic floor health or would like professional guidance, speaking with a qualified physiotherapist can help you better understand your body and your options.

We support women’s health through every stage of life.

Want to give your muscles a boost without extra gym time? The Compex muscle stimulator uses electrical impulses to activate deep muscle fibres, helping increase strength, improve endurance, and speed up recovery – perfect for athletes and rehab alike!

Recent studies show that regular use of devices like Compex can significantly improve muscle strength and reduce recovery time. For example, a 2025 study highlights how EMS helps reduce muscle soreness by improving blood circulation and promoting metabolic waste removal, accelerating recovery after exercise (Patel et al., 2025).

Whether you’re bouncing back from injury or looking for that performance edge, Compex could be the game-changer you need. Always check with your health professional to see if EMS is right for you.

Thinking about starting your fitness journey? There’s no better time than now — and working with a personal trainer can make the start safer, clearer, and more enjoyable.

šŸ“Œ Why personal training makes a difference:

šŸ”¹ Structured guidance beats guessing alone
Research in fitness club settings shows that people training with qualified professionals tend to achieve larger improvements in strength and muscle outcomes compared with training entirely on their own, when both groups follow exercise routines.

šŸ”¹ Support keeps you engaged
A supervised and personalised exercise experience — like one‑on‑one training — helps people stay motivated, feel confident with workouts, and stick with a routine rather than dropping out.

šŸ”¹ Individualised coaching helps you learn safely
Personal trainers tailor sessions based on your starting point, help you learn exercise technique, and create programs that match your fitness level and comfort. This can make beginning exercise feel less overwhelming and more manageable.

✨ Whether you’re completely new to the gym or just getting back into movement, personal training offers a supportive environment to learn the basics, build confidence, and establish good habits.

šŸ’¬ Ready to start? Our team is here to help you take that first step — safely and confidently.

RUNNING HACK #2

You can run… but can you do single‑leg exercises?
Running is essentially a series of single‑leg movements — each step you take loads one leg while the other swings forward. Because of this, strength and stability in each leg individually matters for how smoothly and confidently you move, especially on technical terrain like trails.

Studies show that focusing on single‑leg work can improve how your muscles control movement
during single‑leg tasks (like squatting), which often relates to better stability and muscle balance
off the run.

What the research says:
• Programs that include hip and single‑leg strengthening training have been shown to improve
single‑leg movement mechanics, such as reduced hip adduction and improved control in
single‑leg squats — movements that reflect how your body stabilises during running strides.

• Running requires each leg to work independently with repeated impact and force absorption
— technical trail running magnifies this demand as terrain changes with every step.

That’s why your physios recommend adding single‑leg exercises into your routine. They help build strength and coordination in each leg, which may support your movement quality and your ability to tolerate those repetitive single‑leg demands of running.

šŸ’”Try these single‑leg moves:
• Single‑leg squats
• Single-leg calf raises
• Step‑ups or step‑downs
• Single‑leg glute bridges

Use them a couple of times per week alongside your running — start with bodyweight and focus
on control before adding load.

Why Physiotherapy Recommends Clinical Pilates

At Red Centre Health Focus, our Clinical Pilates sessions are delivered by physiotherapists who tailor each program to your body, your movement patterns and your goals.

Clinical Pilates isn’t just a fitness class — it’s a therapeutic approach to movement that combines controlled exercise, body awareness and progressive loading under expert supervision.

What the evidence says:
• Research shows that Pilates‑based programs can improve core stability, flexibility, dynamic
balance and muscular endurance in adults, even in healthy populations.

• Clinical Pilates is frequently used in rehabilitation settings because it supports controlled
movement, strength and posture, making it a useful component of addressing musculoskeletal conditions.

• Physiotherapists trained in Pilates also report that this approach helps people manage chronic conditions and improve function, adapting exercises to individual needs.

Why physiotherapists incorporate Clinical Pilates:

It emphasises movement control, posture, core stability and coordination —foundational elements in many rehabilitation plans.

Sessions are individualised, with exercises selected and progressed based on your assessment and response.

It can fit alongside other care, including manual therapy, strength work and recovery plans, to support safe movement and confidence in exercise.

Clinical Pilates helps clients learn how to use muscle groups effectively in everyday tasks and activities.

Whether you’re recovering from injury, managing aches, or simply wanting to move better, Clinical Pilates offers a physiotherapy‑guided way to focus on quality movement.

TODAY WE TURN 3! šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‚

Three years ago, Red Centre Health Focus opened its doors, and wow… what a ride it’s been!

From our humble beginnings on Railway Terrace to finding our home on Elder Street, these past three years have been full of growth, learning, and so many special moments.

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, we’ve been able to expand what we offer —
including opening Alice Springs’ first Recovery Centre.

None of this would have been possible without the trust, encouragement, and support of the people who walk through our doors every day.

Thank you for being part of our journey, celebrating the wins with us, and backing our local business.

We can’t wait to see what the next chapter brings!

Looking for a non-surgical option to tackle persistent pain when other treatments haven’t worked? Shockwave therapy might be worth considering.

This treatment uses focused acoustic waves to stimulate your body’s natural healing processes, increase blood flow, and reduce pain in tendons and muscles. It’s commonly used for conditions like plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, and chronic tendon injuries.

Research shows shockwave therapy can effectively reduce pain and improve function. A 2017
study highlighted that shockwave therapy significantly decreased pain and improved quality of
life in patients with various tendinopathies, offering a safe, non-invasive alternative to surgery
(Dedes et al., 2017).

Usually delivered over 3-5 sessions, shockwave therapy lets you keep living your life without downtime and may help avoid more invasive treatments.

Ask a registered health professional if shockwave therapy is right for you.

Got jaw pain, clicking, or trouble opening your mouth? A TMJ (temporomandibular joint) assessment with a physiotherapist could be your first step to relief! We carefully check your jaw’s movement, muscle function, and joint health to pinpoint what’s causing your discomfort and tailor treatments just for you.

Why book an assessment? TMJ disorders are surprisingly common—current research
estimates nearly 30% of people experience signs or symptoms, especially pain-related ones
(CannatĆ  et al., 2025). These symptoms are often linked to stress, jaw clenching, and other
parafunctional habits. Early assessment helps guide effective treatment to reduce pain, improve
jaw mobility, and boost quality of life.

Don’t just grin and bear it—let us help your jaw feel its best!

Welcome to our January Newsletter. Issue #1

While the temperatures were climbing and the clinic aircons were working overtime, our team was busy making the most of the summer break.

From time off with family to a bit of travel, rest, and (yes) still some movement, we’re feeling refreshed and ready for the year ahead.

Philipe & his wife have been jetsetting around the globe to promote Leticia’s new book and they also participated in a Vipassana 10 day silent retreat in India.

Make sure you ask him all about it when he returns in March!

Evie spent time away interstate with family. She fixed up an old billy cart with her sister!

Brianna & her partner Casper have been working at a ski lodge in Japan. Lots of time shovelling snow has been had!

She’s back in clinic next week and be mindful, she has been in the snow all summer so she may struggle with the Alice heat!

Gabriela and Bre covered the clinic over the summer break so that everyone else could enjoy some time off! We are all so grateful for them!

Matt and Steph enjoyed their first Christmas as a family of 3 in Victoria and braved the cold down south.Ā It was great to have a break and know the clinic was in good hands!

NEW SERVICE ALERT! We are now offering personal training services with Evie!

We recognise that some people benefit from additional support alongside physiotherapy, particularly when managing injuries, returning to activity, or maintaining physical wellbeing. Care is guided by individual assessment and realistic, achievable goals. We are now offering a Free Personal Training Discovery Call!

Book a no-obligation discovery call to discuss your goals and whether personal training may be appropriate for you.

Thanks for reading and for being part of the Red Centre Health Focus community. Here’s to moving well, staying strong, and surviving the heat

Stay tuned for next months newsletter!
