20 February is World Social Justice Day.

Social justice means people have equal access to rights, opportunities and resources. This includes housing, income support, health care, safety, and fair treatment under the law.

This year’s theme is Empowering Inclusion: Bridging Gaps for Social Justice.

It reminds us that fairness and dignity must extend across the whole of life.

For many people in the Northern Territory, gaps in access to legal help, advocacy, income support or safe housing can place them at risk of harm or exclusion. These gaps can affect older people experiencing abuse, renters facing eviction, people with disability trying to access supports, or anyone dealing with unfair systems alone.

Social justice is at the core of our mission at Darwin Community Legal Service.

Every day, we work alongside people in our community to:
• stand up for their rights
• access safe housing
• challenge unfair decisions
• seek protection from abuse
• and take part in their community with dignity

Empowering inclusion means making sure people can get help when they need it, understand their rights, and have a fair chance to be heard.

Social justice starts with access, respect and support.

The 'No Shame in Getting Help' animation addresses the stigma and shame that exist for many community members in seeking help for mental health challenges. It reminds us that we all have sad thoughts sometimes but if we're sad for too long we need to get help.
