Meltdowns can sometimes be overwhelming in sessions but at times sometimes less is more, your best calming tools aren’t fidgets, weighted blankets, or blowing bubbles, sometimes it’s a calm nervous system signaling to your client that they’re safe to feel their emotions with you. 🫶🏽😌

Want to know what to do when your child is experiencing sensory overwhelm? Start by figuring out what actually helps them regulate.

For some kids it might be:
❄️ A cold shower or cold water on their face
🎧 Headphones to block out noise
🖐️ Fidgets to keep their hands busy
🕳️ A small, dark, tight space to reset

Every child’s nervous system is different — which means their regulation strategies will be different too.

The key is noticing what helps your child calm, organise and feel safe in their body. From there, you can build a plan that works FOR THEM!

If you’re not sure where to start, connecting with a paediatric OT can help you understand your child’s sensory profile and find the right strategies to support them.

Season 4: Of horror stories as an OT👻

POV: I just wanted to work on fine motor skills… but instead it’s towers being aggressively demolished, balls ricocheting off the walls almost taking out half the clinic, playdough flavours being illegally combined into one cursed blob, and the sudden snap of a pencil breaking in half like it’s the plot twist of the century.
