Off to Adelaide this morning to cover the final round of the Supercars, this was the view from our old place in Adelaide and I will be staying just a few doors up the road. 🤞 I see some more action like this.

A regular question I get is how do I work out where the lightning is ? I am the first to say I am a complete amateur when it comes to weather predictions, I am a photographer who happens to enjoy shooting lighting. I can tell you what I know locally and how I see a build up and where it’s coming from. Beyond that my go to is My Lightning Tracker, it’s a free app and it’s gives me a feel for what might be coming. I often check in with other storm chasing pages ie those with a far greater knowledge of weather than I , SE Qld Weather Photography -Chris McFerran has been very helpful especially with his knowledge locally around where I live.
This is a screen shot of the Lightning Tracker app and I think it is pretty self explanatory. You can set a range and once a strike is recorded you receive an alert on your phone or watch and it will give you distance and direction to where the strike hit.
As I have said previously I have no affiliation with this product or any person I may mention on the page my comments and recommendations are simply my opinion.

Still crawling round the archives, this shot taken in January of 2020 right after the devastating bushfire that ravaged so much of Eastern Australia where 33 people lost their lives and an estimated 3 Billion animals were either killed or displaced. Some of those included many of the Snowy Mountains Brumbies. We drove through parts of Kosciusko National Park the day the fires started but when we spotted the fires becoming more intense we decided it was time to leave. We stayed the night at Batemans Bay but had to evacuate in the early hours of the morning. On a seperate trip I wanted to go back and see just how much of the park had been damaged when I came across this group of brumbies. I have to say it was a very surreal experience.

One of the most common comments made to me is ‘oh you must have a great camera “ and yes that’s an accurate assumption however as I have said so many times before it’s not about the camera until you get into high end commercial use.
I know I have shared this photo before and I know we have lots of new followers since I did post it back in 2022. This shot was taken with my iPhone 11. Understand the basics is my best advise , even if you don’t have a “great camera” the rules are exactly the same. Spend some time on YouTube, ask photographers questions as most are happy to share their experience and expertise.
On that note if you have any questions please feel free to ask away in the comments.

My Australia Down Under

I created this page so I could share my love of this great country with like minded people. I am fortunate to be able to take my passion of photography along with my love of travelling to places many people never get to go and call it my job. I often travel with my wife Kim.

A big part of what I do involves photographing an amazing event each year known as the Great Endeavour Rally raising funds for people with an intellectual disability. Each year we head to amazing destinations, often places that the general public are not allowed to travel. We spend time on private properties, travels roads only the brave would challenge and enjoy the company of some amazing people.

I also have the opportunity to photograph some pretty cool events from V8 Supercars , Rally Australia , World Surf League events like the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast and Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach in Victoria and The Australian Schools Sailing Titles at Lake Macquarie NSW.

In 2019 we are planning a five week long road trip , destination unknown other than picking up Kim from Perth airport after I drive across from Adelaide and dropping her back to Perth on the way back ( this will allow Kim to save 6 days of leave just getting to and from our start point ). Our only criteria are our start and finish dates . We hope to catch up with good friends who will be on road somewhere at sometime. In the past we have decided the direction of our trips by simply choosing left or right at the front gate a but with no plans other than a direction.
