In a bid to help a lost soul I ventured down Cunningham’s Gap to the Ipswich Kart Club at Willowbank. OK so he wasn’t lost just needed a hand with learning his new camera and getting some memories of his son kart racing. This is a random sample of the handful of races I watched today. I haven’t really shot karts before so took me a while to get into the groove but really enjoyed the day.

Back in my absolute favourite place as a photographer. I love nothing more than a few hours shooting surfing but it’s so much better when the best in the world are in town. Tomorrow is the start of the Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro at Snapper Rocks on the Qld NSW border. I will be back from Monday until the end and can’t wait, fingers crossed we even see some sunshine.

One last post from Kyogle and the friendly flying foxes. Next stop Snapper Rocks for a quick look at the World Surf League Training Day for tomorrow’s Bonsoy Gold Coast Pro. Heading home for a couple of days then back for a week of surf action.

So today’s little wander was from Kyogle to Minyon Falls then down to Mullumbimby for lunch then back to Kyogle via Uki.
The falls were great to see however I can only imagine the flow after solid rain. I would strongly advise against trying to take a larger motorhome or caravan up what is essentially a goat track for the final few kilometres to the falls. Word of warning also dogs are not allowed , it’s a shame that the first notice you get that dogs are not permitted is as you pull into the carpark. ( we took it in shifts to mind the dog in the car).
Please don’t be like one young bloke and venture out onto the falls themselves, the rocks are really slippery and it’s a bloody long way to the bottom. For those with a little more energy and time there is a walk to the bottom of the falls but they suggest it’s a couple of hours plus return.
We called in Mullumbimby for lunch and stopped at a great little joint called ICHI BUN burgers. I can highly rate the food the service and its dog friendly.

Grey headed flying foxes in Kyogle. I always just called them fruit bats but you learn something new everyday. We are camped at the Kyogle Gardens Caravan Park, a council run spot with no onsite managers. As we have had a fair bit of rain the last couple of days the sites are quite sodden but fine especially on the top side. The ammenities block is brand new and kept spotless. Back to the bats I can’t say I’m fan but I am fascinated to check them out up close. There is a large population of them here but they didn’t really annoy us at all as long as you don’t sleep in. This particular flying fox camp has been in this same location for over 50 years. Flying foxes are also culturally important to the Gullibul,Githabul ,Wahlubal and Banjalang people who are the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters within the Kyogle Local Government area. They are found in Dreamtime Stories going back 50,000 years. (last bit of info from the Kyogle Council)

We visited Nimbin today, first time in many years and not a whole lot has changed. 3 different people offered me hash cookies , dope and mushrooms within the first 50 metres of leaving the car. I politely declined and wandered off to check out the rest of town. Loads of dreadlocks and tie-dye but all the while all very accommodating and friendly. We did have a cone before we left from Cones and Coffee but just a chocolate ice cream cone. The countryside surrounding is stunning and lush as you would expect in the hinterland setting.
