Background:
The Centre for Community-Driven Research (CCDR) in partnership with BEAT Bladder Cancer Australia are conducting a Patient Experience, Expectations and Knowledge (PEEK) study in Bladder Cancer. PEEK studies give us a clear picture of what it is like to be a patient at a given point in time as well as a way forward to support patients and their families with treatments, information and care. The last study was conducted in 2018 and it was the largest mixed methodology study conducted worldwide within the previous five years for bladder cancer. This 2022 study will provide key data to be used in comparison against the data collected in 2018. Help us find out what has improved and what changes are needed.

CCDR are a charity that conducts research to help patients have their voice heard. PEEK is a comprehensive study covering all aspects of disease experience from symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, healthcare communication, information provision, care and support, quality of life, and future treatment and care expectations.

🩺 The Queensland Bladder Cancer Initiative - QBCI is an expansive program that aims to improve the clinical outcomes and lives of patients with bladder cancer. The Initiative covers all aspects and stages of bladder cancer with community education, advocacy, and support for patients, through to basic and translational research and clinical trials including. Profiled here is our work to understand how molecular subtyping 🧬 could be incorporated into clinical management. A very exciting shift to traditional management of bladder cancer patients.

Congratulations to Queensland Bladder Cancer Initiative - QBCI Masters student, Abby Templeton who recently submitted her first research paper and was accepted to present her work on internationally (virtually in Japan). Let's hear more about Abby below:

My name is Abby Templeton and I am a Master’s student with the Queensland Bladder Cancer Initiative - QBCI and Centre for Personalised Analysis of Cancers (CPAC). I have been part of the team now for about 7 months and it has honestly been one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

My project focuses on looking at new ways to improve the longevity of patient-derived explants (PDEs) or slices of tissues taken from patients having surgery. I’m in the process of determining whether it is feasible for this model to potentially be used in a precision medicine pipeline to predict patient responses to therapy. If we can extend the time where explants are viable in the lab we could use genomic sequencing results to tailor personalised treatments for .

I wanted to join the since I was doing my undergraduate degree at QUT (Queensland University of Technology). I heard about the work they were doing during one of my lectures and I knew that it was a team that I wanted to be part of. Hearing that I would be working with patient samples made me ever more excited to join the team because I knew the would that I would be doing was very translatable and could potentially help patients.

My favourite thing about being part of the is the community outreach and how passionate the team is, not only about their research but also about spreading awareness to the community. This is so important, especially for as it is one of the forgotten or less commonly recognised cancers. I love being part of all the events and taking part in activities that I never would have thought of doing before joining the .

Being apart of such a supportive team has really helped me to push myself out of my comfort zone which has meant that I have achieved more than I though I would in such a short period of time. I recently got accepted to do a presentation at an international conference and invited to speak at a local conference in Brisbane later this year. For myself, these are achievements that I thought I would never achieve, so I am so grateful for my team.

This work has the fantastic support of PA Research Foundation and the Translational Research Institute 🎉🎗- good on you Abby!

Good on you, Alivia Calabrese. Teaching the next generation of scientists and researching bladder cancer all in a day! 👩‍🔬

When the student becomes the teacher…

Today we held the first of our bioinformatics workshops for students studying Genes, Genomes and Genetics, one of the units I coordinate at . I was happy to be helped by a great teaching team that for the first time included 2 previous students who studied the subject 4 years ago and are now qualified medical laboratory scientists.

Alivia pictured with me here is now studying for a masters degree in cancer research at . She also wore one of my t-shirt designs, so that was a bonus!
