Yesterday I had the pleasure of providing an education session to the local Multiple Sclerosis support group. They are such a welcoming bunch that they have members attend from Tamworth and Inverell!

I presented on falls prevention, with tips on addressing as many modifiable risk factors as you can to reduce your falls risk. This is especially important for people with neurological conditions. Don’t accept falls as inevitable!

Some of my clients have been having great outcomes with Aquatic Physiotherapy (hydrotherapy). We use the SportUNE pool which has step and hoist access. Water-based exercise is great for people who have difficulty exercising on land due to pain, high tone, poor muscle control or overheating. An additional benefit can be weight loss, making movement in every day life easier.

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is treated differently to other neurological conditions. Evidence is growing that physiotherapy can be the MOST effective treatment option for those who have movement or motor symptoms such as weakness, paralysis and walking difficulties. Treatment focuses on weight bearing activities and retraining movement patterns.

FND Action (UK) has good information for those experiencing FND.

Due to the diversity of symptoms that may present with a Functional Neurological Disorder, and the varied potential causes/triggers that can differ from person to person, treatment plans must be tailored to suit the person’s individual need, with all health aspects being taken in to consideration....
