Breathing easy isn’t easy for everyone.

At National Clinical Services, lung function testing is a key part of what we do. Many of our clients work in mining and agriculture—industries where daily exposure to dust, chemicals, and airborne particles can take a serious toll on lung health over time.
A lung function test measures how well your lungs are working, including their capacity and airflow. It’s a simple but powerful way to help identify conditions like asthma, COPD, and other respiratory issues—often before they become more serious.

Early detection means better management, better outcomes, and peace of mind.

Your health is our specialty.

FUN FACT FRIDAY: Sleep Apnoea 😴

Did you know the longest recorded sleep apnoea event lasted a staggering 233.8 seconds — that’s nearly 4 minutes without proper airflow.

During an apnoea event, the airway becomes blocked, stopping airflow to the body and brain. Even partial blockages (hypopnoea) can reduce airflow by 30–50%, putting stress on your body night after night.

This isn’t just snoring — it’s your body fighting to breathe.

Look after yourself. Get checked. Sleep better.

Because your health — and your life — matters.

Feeling tired during the day? 😴

Do you wake up feeling okay, get through the morning, and then suddenly start losing energy by lunchtime? After eating, you push on… only to hit that 3pm wall where staying focused becomes a real struggle.

Many people think this is just something they have to put up with — but it doesn’t have to be.

On average, most people only experience 4–6 hours of true peak performance each day. The rest of the time can feel like a battle to push through fatigue, especially during the common 1pm–3pm afternoon slump.

While food, stress, and workload can play a role, this crash is often linked to poor sleep or a lack of quality sleep the night before. If your sleep isn’t restorative, your body simply can’t maintain energy throughout the day.

The good news? Better sleep can dramatically improve your energy, focus, and performance.

If you’re regularly hitting that afternoon wall, it might be time to look at what’s happening while you sleep.

Snoring isn’t just noise — it’s a warning sign.

Snoring can be a big indicator that your airway is struggling to stay open while you sleep.

Ever wondered what actually happens when you snore? Maybe your partner complains about it… or your fitness watch records those little nighttime rumbles. It’s easy to ignore — but it shouldn’t be.

Notice your snoring gets worse after alcohol? There’s a reason for that.

Alcohol acts as a sedative. It relaxes the muscles and dulls the sensors in your throat that normally help control your breathing. When this happens, your upper airway can become what clinicians call a “floppy airway.”

When the airway loses its support:
- It can partially or completely collapse
- Breathing temporarily stops
- Oxygen levels begin to drop
- Your heart rate spikes
Your brain jolts you awake so you can breathe again. This pause in breathing is called an apnoea.

Often, partners or family members are the first to notice it — they might say you stopped breathing, gasped, or choked in your sleep.

💡 The good news? It’s treatable.

But treatment starts with the first step: getting tested.
If you snore loudly, feel tired during the day, or your partner notices pauses in breathing — it might be time to look into a sleep study.

Better sleep. Better health. Better life.

Driving tired? Don’t become part of a statistic.

Fatigue and microsleeps can happen to anyone, and it only takes one second for things to go wrong.
Get tested. Get treated. Get quality sleep.

Because you’re worth it — and the people around you are too.

🚗💤 A split second can change a lifetime.

Microsleeps can happen to anyone — fit or unfit, young or old, healthy or overweight. They don’t always come with warning, and they’re not something you can just brush off.

What if the next time your eyes close for a second… it’s the one that changes everything?

What if the next microsleep you have while driving is your last chance to make a different choice?

You can do something about it today.
Better sleep isn’t just about feeling rested — it’s about staying alive, staying safe, and protecting the people around you.

Don’t wait for a wake-up call you might not survive.
Get tested. Get treated. Get better sleep.

🧠 What is sleep apnoea actually doing to your brain?

Over time, untreated sleep apnoea doesn’t just affect your sleep — it can become a progressive disease that impacts the brain itself.

In the image below:
👉 Right side: a healthy brain, not affected by obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).
👉 Left side: what we refer to as an OSA brain.

So what does that mean?

OSA occurs when the upper airway becomes blocked during sleep, causing repeated drops in oxygen levels and spikes in heart rate throughout the night. These events can happen hundreds of times, night after night.

The brain on the left shows signs of what’s known as OSA-related brain injury — changes seen in people whose sleep apnoea has gone untreated. These repeated oxygen desaturations can reduce blood flow to the brain, which may lead to long-term damage.

As researcher Paul Macey explains:
“We know there is injury to the brain from sleep apnea, and we also know that the heart has problems pumping blood to the body, and potentially also to the brain.”

The takeaway?
Sleep apnoea isn’t “just snoring” — early diagnosis and treatment matters, not only for your sleep, but for your brain and overall health.
