A case of hand and foot: did you know that the hand can affect the foot and vice versa... A patient presented with a cross over dysfunction known as the liver pattern; left hip to right shoulder. The right foot was super tight across the top into all the toes with tight tendons and tight tarsal joints of the foot. The straight leg raise was very restricted on the opposite side of the left leg. The right arm was holding tension through the triceps and then back if the forearm and into the back of the hand. The wrist pressure point in the middle of the back of the wrist and centre of the back of the hand was very sensitive to touch, which surprised the patient as they were not aware of the sensitivity of this area. After treating the neck to the fingers the sensitivity died down and the right foot tightness completely relaxed. The left straight leg raise was normal after retesting and the liver pattern left hip to right shoulder completely opened up along the spine .

Understanding pain is like finding something you lost in the dark. Unless there is illumination finding your answer is near impossible. Illumination or shining the light on the cause, can help you understand why you are in pain and why you are suffering. It is important that subconsciously you can follow what the therapist finds and why it is important to your condition. Every story starts with it's first word and it is important to be told your story. Take the time to build your story page by page, so that the underlining cause is found and effective treatment can be given for resolution of your condition is achieved.

Are you feeling liverish? a case study of sciatica and hip pain causing disability with ambulation.

A patient comes in with (R) sided sciatica and hip pain pulling down into the inside of the the thigh.

palpation demonstrated very tight layers from the rib cage down the abdominal system and along the quadriceps muscle and peroneal muscles, Cx extensors and scalene muscles were very tight, pectoral muscles and deltoid muscles were very tight, galea aponeurosis was tight and frontalis muscle was tight.
Upon further prompting she reported her eyes have been very hot with a burning sensation and that her gastrointestinal system felt uncomfortable with eating solid foods.
pulse analysis demonstrated a wiry stiff pulse that was weak and fast on the right and a full tight pulse on the left.
These things demonstrated that her liver was affected and causing joint pain with referral into the lower limb.
spinal mobilisation demonstrated somatovisceral referral phenoma into the liver and gastrointestinal system.

Treatment was tailored towards opening up the liver meridian and kidney meridian, with stimulation of Liver point 1, 2 and 3, kidney points 3, 6 and 7, abdominal release and liver fascial release, facial treatment and neck release, spinal manual therapy was also performed.

Treatment was successful in eliminating all the pain and sciatica.

Why energy matters a case of total knee reconstruction

A patient comes in 8 weeks post TKR operation, able to ambulate normally with no pain. Awareness of stiffness and heaviness mainly in the morning and at the end of the day, massages around the knee for relief. Continues to use icing for oedema management.

The affected limb is noticably swollen when compared to the normal limb, scar looks ok with good healing no oozing or ruptures were evident, puckering was demonstrated from the knee cap down to the end of the scar onto the tibia.
neurological assessment demonstrated some restriction on the affected side and opposite upper limb with neurological provocation testing. muscle testing demonstrated weakness in the affected glute maximus, hamstring and triceps surae and opposite lattissimus dorsi, opposite QL was facilitated and ipsilateral iliopsoas was weak with testing
Opposite shoulder AROM was limited into Internal rotation.
Spinal assessment demonstrated stiffness and sensitivity from lower the cervical to lumbar vertebral segments.
Of importance when assessing energetic flow patterns if you stimulate the minor chakra points if they are congested you will feel the energy radiating the wrong way, for example when stimulating the ankle joint minor chakra and the stomach point in the web of the 3rd and 4th metatarsal space the energy was radiating back up into the knee.

Treatment cleared the spine and restored the energetic triple flow bringing balance of the shoulders and hips, the legs opened up restoring normal muscle tension and strength balance of the periarticular muscles of the knee and ankle. Also, checking the ankle minor chakra demonstrated a proper energetic flow pattern central to peripheral.

The patient after treatment felt a massive improvement in his knee.

Why energy matters a case of severe ankle sprain...

A case study to illustrate how focusing on how the energetic systems impact on the body in relation to a sever ankle strain , a patient has presented with his condition 10 days post injury. All work ups have been properly conducted and assessed with a diagnosis of grade 2 ATFL sprain, partial weight bearing was demonstrated but has not been able to weight bear until 8 days post injury.

Assessment demonstrated opposite upper arm autonomic dysfunction when palpation over important varmam points of the upper arm were stimulated. points on the back on the ipsilateral side of the ankle sprain demonstrated reactivity with central and peripheral referral phenomenon when stimulation the 1st and 2nd lines of the bladder channel were performed. stimulation of the gallbladder / stomach channel between the knee and ankle were performed with referral patterns into the ankle as well as the ankle joint directly and the web of the toes 1st and 2nd rays and 4th and 5th rays only.

All reactive areas on the opposing limbs, ipsilateral spinal points that do not correspond with known myotome and sclerotome patterns that reffered into the zone of injury were all used as treatment to restore energetic flow to that area and bring back balance of the whole body.

So this is a quick description at how something like a ankle sprain has changes in the whole body that affect the sensitivity of points that are important in regulation normal healing processes, and can be the key to effective healing of an injury.

Why energy matters in healing your pain and suffering?

Conventional physiotherapy assesses muscle, nerve and bones.
But it is very important to assess blood flow, fascial connections and energy flow.

I love the quote and is very relevant to this topic "Where the blood flows chi goes and where the chi goes blood flows".

So basically, if the energy is flowing through the body properly , the healing process will work effectively and efficiently, if there is a blockage then the healing process becomes sluggish and inefficient , causing persistent pain and suffering that leads into chronic conditions that affect approximately 10 percent of the population.

Energy flows through the fascial network of the human body , the fascia supports muscle that pulls on you bones to create movement.
It has an essential role in the functional ability of the systems of the body, it affects functions, such as, metabolism, transformation, assimilation and elimination which is important for proper functioning of organs and systems of the human body.

So, next time you get any therapy, think to yourself are they treating your energetic system as well. This may be the missing key to solve your pain and suffering.

Shoulder pain and Ribcage cramping

Working in the office at a desk constantly all day can cause neck, back and shoulder pain. Repetitive stress occurs causing carpal tunnel issues in the wrist and thoracic outlet syndrome. So a good routine to maintain normal physiological function is important, to keep yourself pain free, which allows you to be more mentally focused with tasks at hand.

4 points that will help you get control of any shoulder pain associated with wrist stiffness.

1. Upper trapezius point 1 is called gallbladder 21 (GB21)
2. Bladder point 47 4 fingerbreads below the inferior angle of the scapula
3. lung 2
4. Extra point on the lung meridian below lung 10 called double saints 22.02

A link between the Subscapularis muscle and Quadratus lumborum causing low back pain

A case study for everyone to share and benefit from is as follows:

A patient comes in with one sided low back pain. It is evident that the patient has an uncompensated pattern, that means they look all twisted from head to foot, because the tension is holding them off balance,

Assessment demonstrates limited forward bending due to excessive tension in the hamstrings and low back with some discomfort and mild pain on the way down and back up again.
Hip flexion was asymmetrical with the opposite hip flexor in spasm and limiting hip flexion to 90 degrees.
Further assessment demonstrated sacral torsion away from the tight flank so for example a tight left hip flexor will cause a right side bend and rotation to the left of the sacrum.

A quick check was made with hands behind the back and hands behind the head with forward bendin; the hands behind the back was harder to bend forward, then the patient was asked to place one hand behind the hand and the opposite hand behind the back and bend forward then the opposite was assessed.
It was interesting to see that the side with the hand behind the back and the opposite hand behind the head when on the same side of the tight quadratus lumborum muscle was more limited than any of the other three positions described in detail above.
This indicated that the subscapularis muscle on the same side as the tight side of the low back has a direct relationship with the stiffness in the flank.
Strengthening of the subscapularis muscle was performed with a theraband on the side of the hand behind the back, and the movement testing was re-evaluated with considerable improvement of greater than 30 percent was seen immediately in forward bending and reduction in pain to mild stiffness and no pain was seen.
