Augmentative and Alternative Communication - AAC

Simply, AAC refers to communication that does not involve speech.

This can include:
👋🏼 facial expressions
👋🏼 body movements & gestures
👋🏼 manual signing
👋🏼 speech generating devices
👋🏼 tablets
👋🏼 communication boards

Common questions and facts around AAC:
⭐️ Communication is a human right, AAC supports this.
⭐️Introducing AAC early can support development of language, speech, and social skills.
⭐️Using AAC will not prevent a child from developing or using spoken language.
⭐️Different systems suit different individuals.
⭐️AAC users need to use their system across a range of environments, everyday.

Our therapists use a variety of AAC in their sessions everyday to support their client’s communication.

Over the past five weeks, student Cindy has undertaken her Speech Pathology placement at Sound Beginnings. One of Cindy’s key responsibilities was being involved in screening assessments at local kindergartens to support service delivery in the community. It has been a joy having Cindy as part of our team and we wish her all the best for the remainder of her student journey! 📚 📖
