Is your child 👧👦 experiencing heel pain & tenderness underneath the heel?🦶Sever’s disease is a painful 😕 condition that most commonly affects children between the ages of 8 & 14 years, when growth spurts are beginning. It happens when the tendon that attaches to the back of the heel (Achilles tendon) pulls on the growth plate (apophysis) of the bone 🦴 of the heel (calcaneus).
Common signs and symptoms:
o Pain is usually absent 😀when your child gets up in the morning 🌞
o Increased pain with weight bearing, running, or jumping 🏃‍♀️⛹🏻‍♀️🤾🏼‍♂️
o Tenderness on heel compression
o No redness 🟥 or skin changes are found although there could be mild swelling
o Your child may limp at the end of physical activity
o Limited ankle flexion range secondary to tightness
o The pain gradually resolves with rest 🪑 🛏
o Standing tiptoe aggravates the heel pain 🦶
At Ashmore Podiatry, our podiatrists can help to provide relief with physical therapy management. Treatment depends on the severity of your child’s symptoms and may include:
• Rest &/or temporary cessation of sports
• Taping
• Orthoses prescribed to correct secondary foot malalignments
• Prescribing stretches to improve flexion and exercises to strengthen extensors
• Gentle mobilisation
• Checking footwear 👟 as poor-quality or worn-out shoes can contribute to increased symptoms
If you notice your child is experiencing heel pain with no known recent injuries or falls, don’t ignore it.

If conservative management of an ingrown toenail fails, the problem is ongoing, or infection has not responded to antibiotic therapy, minor surgical intervention may be necessary for a permanent solution. The procedure to remove an ingrown nail is performed in one of our fully equipped clinic rooms at Ashmore Podiatry by our qualified and experienced podiatrists using sterile techniques.
A local anaesthetic is skilfully administered to ensure the surgery is pain free and the procedure usually takes less than one hour. The minor surgery is called a partial nail avulsion (PNA) and it involves removing a small portion of the troublesome nail and permanently preventing that part of the nail growing back. We apply a chemical called phenol which destroys the nail-growing cells in the nail bed.
The patient will be left with a slightly narrower nail that continues to grow normally, but without the edge that was constantly becoming ingrown. Most results are aesthetically pleasing as there are no scars or damage to the surrounding skin and remaining nail. This procedure has an 80% long-term resolution success rate.
Don’t persevere with ongoing ingrown toenail problems. Our podiatrists at Ashmore Podiatry are highly skilled at achieving a positive treatment outcome for our valued patients.

DON'T BE A FOOL AND IGNORE PAIN 😢
It’s important to recognise that not all pain is the result of damage done to our body (nociceptive) but can be the result of impacts to our pain messaging pathways ❌ (neuropathic), or alterations to the function of our pain messaging (dysfunctional).
Understanding your type of pain is essential as this will have significant implications for the type of treatment - particularly the use of medications💊 - as each of these pain mechanisms can be resolved through different medications and treatment choices.
Secondly, the timeframe and severity of the pain can greatly differ with each different type of pain, yet all may be triggered by seemingly similar sets of circumstances i.e. something you did at the gym, worked really long days for a period of time, slept in an uncomfortable bed. 🛏
So next time you receive an injury, take a moment to really think about the pain and the level of discomfort. 🤔
If your pain becomes too much to handle, or there is no change in your pain over several days, it’s important to see a professional 👩‍⚕️ to assess your type of pain/injury and the best methods for treatment.
This will prevent long-term issues and prevent the pain becoming chronic and debilitating as time goes on. 👩‍🦯
