Safety Alert: Over recent months, new customers across Australia have expressed concerns regarding the reliability of OEM wheelchair restraints in Japanese-imported disability vans. In response, Brisbane Wheelchair Lifters commissioned independent pull testing by APV-T Test Centre in Victoria for these Japanese OEM wheelchair restraints. The results revealed that none of the tested cables satisfied the minimum AS/NZS 10542.1:2015 standard of 14.7 kN. Notably, three out of four restraints failed at less than 50% of the required strength, with only one achieving 65%. Currently, hundreds of these imported disability vans are operating throughout Australia. This issue warrants the attention of the NDIS, State Transport Departments, and the Federal Department of Infrastructure, with consideration for a potential national recall to address these unsafe wheelchair restraints. Owners of Toyota Hiace Welcab or Nissan Caravan vehicles equipped with original OEM restraints are strongly advised to arrange replacements as soon as possible.
