A study from New Zealand just published in the Journal of Physiology has shown just how effective HIIT (high intensity interval training) can be for your brain.
They compared the individual and combined effects of three factors: fasting for 20 hours, 90 minutes of light exercise (cycling) and 6 mins HIIT (also on the bike). The key measurement was a protein called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor).
BDNF is involved in brain plasticity and functions of the brain including memory and learning. Increased levels are thought to be key for protecting the brain, especially as we age, so it's a hot topic in research knowing how we can influence production.
The result? HIIT was the winner, by a long shot, producing 4-5 times more BDNF in the circulation that light exercise. Fasting did not have any additional effects (although there may be other benefits of fasting on brain health).
Nice motivation to me to get back to my Cycle Burn HIIT class this week! And a reminder to those of you thinking exercise is about weight control... it's so much more than that! Your brain loves and needs exercise, just as much as the rest of your body 🧠
