đźš© Red flag: pus, a strong new odour, or suddenly heavier ooze

If a wound starts producing pus, develops a new strong smell, or the drainage suddenly becomes heavier or changes colour, take it seriously. These changes can be signs of infection or a wound that needs a prompt reassessment; especially if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or the area is becoming more tender, red, or warm.

If the discharge is increasing quickly, the odour is new, or you feel unwell, seek urgent medical care.

In many hospital settings, like ours, multiplace chambers are pressurised with air; patients then breathe oxygen through a hood or mask.

It’s a behind-the-scenes detail that helps with safety, comfort, and clinical monitoring.

Before starting HBOT, ask what type of chamber you will use and how oxygen is delivered; knowing the setup often reduces anxiety.

What’s your biggest question about what a session actually feels like?

đźš© Red flag: new numbness, colour change (blue, grey, black), or a cold foot/hand

If a foot or hand becomes newly numb, turns blue, grey, or black, or feels noticeably cold compared with the other side, seek urgent medical assessment.

These changes can signal reduced blood flow or tissue damage and can become serious quickly; especially if you have diabetes, vascular disease, or a wound.

Do not wait for your next appointment if you notice these signs.

đźš© Red flag: red streaks travelling up the limb

If you notice red streaks moving away from a wound up your foot, leg, hand, or arm, treat it as urgent.

This can be a sign of infection spreading through lymphatic channels and it needs prompt medical assessment, even if the wound itself seems small.

If you also have fever, chills, increasing pain, swelling, or feel unwell, seek urgent care immediately.

đźš© Red flag: fever, chills, feeling unwell, or a racing heart

If you have a wound and you develop fever, chills, a new sense of being unwell, or a racing heart, it can be a sign your body is dealing with a significant infection. Don’t assume it will pass; these symptoms need prompt medical review, even if the wound itself does not look dramatically different yet.

If symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or you feel faint or confused, seek urgent care immediately.

Did you know we can measure oxygen at the wound edge?
We use TCOM (transcutaneous oxygen measurement) to estimate how much oxygen is reaching the skin around a wound.

It can help guide whether a wound is likely to benefit from HBOT as part of a broader plan, and it can be repeated to track changes over time.

If you have a hard-to-heal wound, ask your treating team whether TCOM or another perfusion test is appropriate for you.

Most people think oxygen only rides on red blood cells; in HBOT, the increased pressure helps oxygen dissolve directly into plasma (the liquid part of blood).

That extra dissolved oxygen can temporarily improve delivery to tissues that are struggling with microcirculation.

Practical tip; if you are being assessed for HBOT, ask how your team is checking circulation and oxygen delivery to the area (for example, pulses, Doppler studies, or TCOM).

What surprised you most about this; the pressure part or the plasma part?

WARNING: Clinical images.

A 58-year-old with diabetes sustained a significant crush injury with a lacerated artery; early testing showed low tissue oxygen (TCOM). With comprehensive wound care and 19 HBOT sessions, the heel progressively improved, and at 5 months the skin had healed.

HBOT can be considered in selected complex wounds as part of a broader treatment plan; outcomes vary.
