Botulinum toxin type A is an evidence-based treatment for axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweating). In Australia, it can be administered by an appropriately qualified medical practitioner following clinical assessment.
How it works-
• Sweat glands are activated by sympathetic cholinergic nerves that release acetylcholine.
• Botulinum toxin type A temporarily inhibits the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction.
• This reduces the overstimulation of eccrine sweat glands, lowering sweat production in the treated area.
Clinical considerations:
• Treatment typically provides symptom reduction for 4–9 months, though duration varies.
• Common temporary effects may include mild injection-site discomfort, localised bruising, or transient muscle weakness.
• It is not suitable for everyone- a full consultation will be carried out
If excessive underarm sweating affects your daily life, we can evaluate whether botulinum toxin type A is an appropriate and safe option for you.
