👄 JAW PAIN 👄

If you’ve ever seen me for treatment for jaw pain, you probably have a very love/hate relationship with this image! 😬 ❤️

Jaw pain, or issues with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), can cause a wide range of issues for people including:
🔸Persistent headaches, particularly over the temples and above the eyebrow areas
🔸Pain in the jaw, cheeks, ears or neck
🔸Sometimes jaw instability or dislocations, or clicking and popping sensations in the jaw
🔸Locked or tight jaw
🔸Pain when eating, talking or even at rest
🔸Reduced range of motion in the mouth
🔸Trouble eating certain foods that are chewy or need a large bite (eg steak, apples, nuts, chewing gum)

These issues can be often be closely tied to bruxism, stress, injury or clenching and grinding of the teeth 🦷 They can be from the TMJ joint itself, which connects the jaw bone to the rest of your facial bones, but it can often be an issue with all the surrounding muscle tissues as well.

As a soft tissue OT, I often work with people with jaw and TMJ issues. We look at different ways we can relieve your pain around daily life.

Treatment for TMJ jaw pain aims to reduce muscle spasms, increase mobility, correct muscle imbalances, reduce pain and inflammation and improve function. So you can enjoy that steak, apple or handful of nuts without the jaw issues 🙌

A lot of jaw treatment is through hands-on treatment of your jaw muscles - hence this picture! 📸

If you are experiencing jaw or TMJ issues, or know someone who is, feel free to get in touch with me directly to chat before making an appointment. Otherwise, you can use the link below to make an appointment at any time:

🚪 DOORWAY CHEST STRETCHES 🚪

These simple stretches just require a doorway and a few minutes of your time! ⏰

They give a lovely chest-opening stretch that can help to relieve shoulder, neck and mid back pain. Doing them regularly can also help to improve your posture! 👌🏻

1️⃣ STRETCH 1
Take one hand either side of the doorway, bending your elbows at 90 degrees. Make sure your elbows are in line with your chest. Gently lean into the doorway, keeping your hands firmly placed against the edges of the doorway. Hold for 30 seconds.

2️⃣ STRETCH 2
Now move your hands up the doorframe, so your hands are above head height. Gently lean into the doorway, keeping your hands firmly placed against the doorway - you feel this stretch more in your arms and top of your chest. Hold for 30 seconds.

3️⃣ STRETCH 3
Now move your hands down the doorframe, so your elbows are below your chest height. Gently lean into the doorway, keeping your hands firmly placed against the edges of the doorway. Hold for 30 seconds.

🙏🏻 These should feel like nice stretches all the way through your chest and arms.

🛑 It shouldn’t feel like increased pressure on your neck or back, nor should it give any pain or tingling down your arms - if it does, stop the stretch and seek the advice of myself or another health professional.

💁🏻‍♀️Some tips:
Don’t “bounce” these stretches, take it nice and slow. And just be careful not to apply too much pressure and keep it gentle! And remember to breathe deeply.

🙋🏻‍♀️As always, check with me or a suitable health professional for advice if you’re not sure about which stretches are best for you personally.

🪑 VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE - AND OF HOW YOU SIT! 🪑

We all know the “right way” to sit ergonomically – feet fight on the floor, supportive chair, elbows at 90 degrees, screen around eye level… the classic checklist we've been taught for computer work, reading and long tasks 💻

But if you're sitting perfectly, why do you still get sore? 🤔

The answer is simple… Your body craves variety!

No amount of good ergonomics will override your body’s natural need for movement. Humans aren't built to stay in one position for a long period of time – no matter how ideal or ergonomic that position may be.

When we stay still for too long, our muscles fatigue, joint stiffen, and our circulation slows 😩 Change the position though, and suddenly things feel a bit fresh again 🙌

This is why I’ll often encourage patients to change their posture frequently and sprinkle little micro breaks throughout the day. You don't need to do a massive movement session - just small shift to feel the benefits.

This can include:
▪️Moving to a different chair or the couch for a few minutes – even if it's not perfect. It'll give your body a new shape, relieve pressure wake up new muscles to use.
▪️Lie on your tummy on the floor to work or scroll for a few minutes- this can feel great for your back and hip flexors - but not for too long.
▪️Sit in a comfy armchair for a short break to unload your spine.
▪️Stand up to work – use a stand-up desk, the kitchen bench or even a steady shelf.
▪️Switch to kneeling(on a cushion) for a short stint to open up your hips.
▪️Try sitting cross legged with one leg up (yes even at your desk!) – then switch sides.
▪️Use the dictation or voice-to-text features on your devices to stand up and talk to your computer, instead of typing (if you need help with this, just ask next time you’re in)
▪️If you're printing in the office, pick the printer that's furthest away from you so you have to get up and walk to it. Or drink lots of water so that you are forced to do small walks to the bathroom.
▪️Do a seat wiggle or a pelvic tilt – tiny movement wake up your core and reduce stiffness.

So what does this mean? That the best posture is your next posture. Ergonomics matter – but movement matters more 🚶🏻‍♀️‍➡️

If you'd like help setting up your workspace or learning different ways to sit throughout the day, please just reach out, or let me know next time you're in the clinic! 😊
