Funeral Fact – Friday the 13th Edition 👀
In the 1800s, a very real fear existed called “being buried alive.”

Because medical science wasn’t as advanced, people were terrified that someone might be mistakenly declared dead. To prevent this, some coffins were designed with “safety bells.” A string was tied to the person’s hand inside the coffin and ran up through the ground to a bell above the grave.

If the person woke up… they could ring the bell.

While it sounds eerie today, it actually led to better medical checks and modern standards that ensure this could never happen now.

So while Friday the 13th might have its spooky reputation… some real funeral history is far stranger than superstition.

Meet Leanne

I was born and raised in Innisfail in Far North Queensland and come from a hardworking family with strong rural roots.

My father migrated to Australia from Italy and worked cutting cane in the Innisfail district before later becoming a tramline supervisor in the sugar industry. My mother was born into a Maltese migrant family and was raised on a cane farm where life centred around family and hard work.

Growing up in that environment instilled in me a strong work ethic and the values of honesty, respect and community.

When my husband Robin and I began looking for a funeral business, we were not simply searching for a business opportunity. We were looking for a place where we could become part of a regional community and provide genuine care to families during difficult times.

When the opportunity to purchase Burdekin Funerals arose, it felt like the right fit. The Burdekin community, its rural character, and its proximity to family and friends in Townsville, Ayr and the surrounding region made it a place that immediately felt close to home.

Robin and I have committed ourselves fully to continuing the service that Burdekin families deserve. Our focus is on caring for families with compassion, honouring those who have passed with dignity, and building long standing relationships within the community.

Sharing some of my story on International Womens Day feels additionally approriate as together with the local manager Amie, and our committed support staff, I am proud to work beside so many strong women that are part of modern funeral care and I am so pleased to be one of them here in the Burdekin.

On International Women’s Day, we recognise the incredible women who shape our families, our community, and the lives around us.

Women who nurture, guide, comfort and support others through both life’s celebrations and life’s most difficult moments. Their strength, compassion and quiet resilience leave a lasting impact that carries through generations.

Today we also acknowledge the wonderful women within our own Burdekin Funerals team. The care, empathy and dedication they show to the families we serve each day is truly special, and we are grateful for the compassion they bring to their work.
