Congratualtions Karen πŸ‘πŸ‘

Congratulations to Karen Pfeiffer, Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator at Balaklava, finalist of the 2024 Excellence in Aged Care Award! πŸŽ‰

Karen goes above and beyond daily to support consumers in living their best lives. From the smell of fresh bread or pancakes made to order, to ensuring that every consumer, especially those at risk of isolation, can enjoy meals and engage in activities that bring them joy, Karen’s dedication is unmatched.

Karen's mission is to understand what matters most to each consumer, helping them set goals and develop strategies that promote independence and holistic wellbeing. As a central figure in her team, Karen fosters trusted relationships with consumers, their families, and staff. Karen supports even the tiniest details in care, ensuring each resident feels valued, whether helping residents dress in their best clothes for church or applying their favourite lipstick before family outings.

Karen champions inclusion and diversity through initiatives like the Shoelace Project, supporting the LGBTQIA+ community and encouraging open discussions among all. Karen also facilitates participation in the Balaklava Show, empowering residents to showcase their strengths and connect with the community.

From organising high teas and supporting residents to have their own pets (birds) to arranging visits from local coffee vans to give residents barista-quality coffee, Karen creates a warm and inviting environment that brings joy and purpose to all.

Join us in congratulating Karen’s amazing contributions! πŸ‘

Congratulations and Thankyou Gail

Gail Olsen's association with the Balaklava Hospital began when she was just 13 working after school and weekends as a domestic (as it was known in the 1970s) delivering meal trays to patients and cleaning rooms.

Gail says that nursing back then was very different; a regimented profession marked by uniforms, rank and strict observance of tradition.

Over the years, Gail shares that she has seen tremendous change.

Gone are the days of nurses being drilled on perfectly mitred bed corners, evolving into a highly-specialized allied health profession where even the most experienced nurses are constantly learning.

One thing that hasn’t changed – the bond between nurses.

β€œI am nearing retirement, but the Balaklava Hospital has, and always will be, my work family,” Gail said.

Happy , Gail.

Thank you for your dedicated service to the Balaklava community and YNLHN!

We were very sorry to hear of the passing of Dr Donald Beard, late last year.
It was a delight to have him attend our 100th celebrations last March. By all accounts he thoroughly enjoyed the day and his many catchups.
Here he is pictured on the day with Kath Catford.
We extend our deepest sympathy to his family.

The 10/27th Battalion Band, Royal South Australian Regiment entertained Ira Parker residents and invited guests on Sunday 21st August at the Hospital as part of the small ceremony to unveil the History Board and placement of the time capsule.
The band provided several musical items, ranging from As Time Goes By, Herb Albert & the Tijuana Brass as well as a little Van Morrison etc. which were well received by their audience. There was lots of toe-tapping to the music by all in attendance and especially from the residents of Ira Parker Nursing Home.
Many thanks to the band for the enjoyment provided on this day, and also the Centenary celebration held in March, and assisting in the acknowledgment of the military involvement and connection with the hospital over these past 100 years.
