This is the question that often throws Caesarian Mums a little.

They might say that they don’t have any issues with PAIN, or TIGHTNESS in their scar.

They might not be experiencing any pelvic issues, like leaking or painful s*x.

And they might not be struggling with a belly ‘pooch’ or ‘overhang’.

Which is all GREAT 👏🏻.

But when we start chatting about all things breath, it gets them thinking…

▶️ Can you take a big deep belly breath? And, if you can, is it EASY? Or does it feel hard to do?

▶️ Do you struggle with shortness of breath? Can you get puffed quite easily?

▶️ Do you notice stiffness or tightness around your ribs, or under your diaphragm?

🤔

These kinds of symptoms can be linked to scar tissue and adhesions from your C-Section scar.

Wild, isn’t it?!

So, if you’re a C-Section Mum, try a few good deep belly breaths for me, and ponder these questions above… then tell me - how’s your scar?

After your Caesarian, it is REALLY important that you stay on top of your pain control.

When your pain is under control, you can move more easily, care for your new bub more easily, and start on your journey to a better recovery, more easily!

Trying to be ‘brave’, or simply forgetting about pain meds, can be a recipe for a slower, less enjoyable recovery, that can impact both you and your baby…

When you’re in the hospital, the nursing staff will help you manage your pain control, by regularly providing pain relief, and reminding you to take it.

Once you’re discharged, back in your home, it’s even more important to have regular pain relief (partly as you’ll likely be doing more than when you were in hospital!).

I recommend to all of my C-Section Mums to start using a timer or alarm from the very start.

When you take your meds, set the timer for when you’re NEXT allowed to take a dose of that medication. And when the timer goes off - take it! Even if you’re feeling pretty good - stay on top of the pain.

For those first few weeks, don’t wait until your level of pain creeps up to remember to take your pain meds. This approach is likely to leave you in more pain, and less likely to move around. Less movement = slower recovery.

Most Mums will go home from hospital only needing paracetamol and ibuprofen, so check with your doctors how frequently you can take each. Alternate when you take each one, and stick with this for at least the first 2 weeks.

How did you go with pain relief after your birth?

3 quick and easy questions for the pregnant ladies, with a C-Section birth coming up.

1️⃣ - Packed some chewing gum? Trust me, this is a good one! Get some chewy, and start chewing once you’re back on the ward!

2️⃣ - Compression is key for a great recovery. You might not use it in the first day or two, but have it ready to go for when you’ll be up and about a bit more. Awesome for pain, and for a better scar!

3️⃣ - P**p Foods. Ugly name, but can be a godsend! Depending on your hospital, and their menu, I’d be packing extra high fibre, bowel friendly snacks, to make that first 💩 as easy as possible.

Save this post for later, and check out the link to C-Ready, if you are looking for all the tips and tricks to have a beautiful, calm and rewarding C-Section birth.

C-Section Mums: save this one!

These stretches can be started as early as they feel comfortable (I often say start these when you get home from hospital).

To start with, it might feel really tight, and a little uncomfortable. Make sure you keep your breathe going all the way through, and you listen to your body. If it hurts, don’t push so far.

Know a C-Section Mum who could use these? Please send her this post, and help her get moving

When you’re pregnant, you’re pretty much in the training zone for the hardest and most challenging period of your life - coming up very soon!

It’s SO important and SO beneficial for you to have a STRONG core, and that you safely, effectively and progressively load your core muscles, so that you can get through the trenches of motherhood as *easily* as possible!

Bending over cots. Carrying capsules. Bouncing an unsettled baby in your arms for 6 hours straight (oh please God, no! But it happens…)

A strong core, that moves well and supports your lifestyle is vital.

So make sure you’re exercising with people who know what they’re talking about. And work your core effectively in pregnancy!

C-Section related issues can present in lots of different ways, and sometimes, women aren’t even aware that the issue they’re struggling with, is linked to their c-section scar.

Common things we see in clinic that stem from a tight or restricted scar are

💛 Bladder frequency / needing to p*e more often
💚 Hip / pelvic pain, often feeling like tightness
🩵 Low back pain
💙 Fatigue and low energy, linked to poor breathing and a stiff, unhappy scar and abdominal wall
🩷 Feeing bloated or bulgy around the tummy and scar.

Having an assessment with a therapist trained in C-Section recovery can provide incredible relief for these things - so if they’re familiar to you, please don’t put up with it! Reach out for some help

I remember being devastated when I found out I’d be having a C-Section…

There were tears, heavy hearts, waves of hopelessness, and a not-infrequent whisper of ‘you’re not good enough’ rattling inside my head.

I thought it mattered SO much how I birthed my baby.

I thought a Caesarian made me less of a Mum.

I thought so many things, that left me feeling… crappy.

I wish I’d known, that it really didn’t matter. How he arrived in this world, would have zero meaning about the kind of Mum I could become.

To all the Mums out there - you are most definitely ’enough’.

You can be so grateful that your bub is safely…

And -

…still grieve the birth you didn’t have.

You don’t have to pick one or the other.

Both feelings can, and so often DO, exist at the same time.

If you’ve found yourself smiling on the outside but feeling a little broken underneath, you’re not doing anything wrong at all.

You’re human.

You can love your baby completely, and still wish your birth had felt different.

You can feel strong AND fragile.

Healing AND hurting.

All of it belongs.

If this hits home, drop a 💛 or share it to your stories - someone else probably needs to hear it too.

It’s a huge myth about C-sections, and it really needs debunking…

You DO have choices.

You CAN express your preferences.

And you ABSOLUTELY deserve to feel heard and supported.

Just because your birth happens in an operating theatre, doesn’t mean you hand over all control.

Even small, considered choices can make an enormous difference in how calm, confident, and connected you feel on the day.

This is why I created my C-Section Birth Plan template — to help you understand your options and advocate for the birth you want.

💛 If you haven’t downloaded it yet, comment PLAN and I’ll send it to you
💛 And if you already have it, I’d love you to tell me — what’s one preference that matters most to you?
