Free event: Wednesday 26th of April, 2023, 6-7pm.

What's it like to realise you're autistic, and how do you start to ask the world around you to accept that?

Professor Sandra Thom-Jones tells the story of gradually realizing that she was autistic. From the outside looking in, Sandra Thom-Jones was living a successful life: she had a great career, a beautiful home, a caring husband, two loving sons, and supportive friends. But, from the inside looking out, she was struggling to make sense of her place in the world, constantly feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, and convinced that her challenges with daily life just meant that she had to try harder - she experienced the world in ways that were markedly different from neurotypical people.

Happy International Women's Day!

Shout out to all of the women who were diagnosed late or not at all because diagnositc criteria was developed by doctors who only studied boys, to those who took longer for their comorbid diagnoses to be recognised because women's pain is so often not acknowledged, and to those who aren't given the accomodations they need to function more comfortably as a disabled person in society because they aren't disruptive, got so good at masking, or don't look disabled enough.

Shout out to all of the mums and carers who provide so much unpaid labour, the educators and disability workers who are understaffed and underpaid, and therapists who work in a female-dominant field.

We see you and support you, every day of the year.

This year Ballarat Libraries is hosting an audiobook party and Listening Hour at Sebastopol library for the Australia Reads Reading Hour on Thursday the 9th of March from 10am-12pm.

There are so many reasons to love audiobooks. Sometimes physical books are too heavy or tricky to hold, the pages may have a texture that is difficult to tolerate, the font might be too small or not visible at all, or written words might not fit well with the way your brain works. Listening to audiobooks makes it easier to move around if moving helps you to concentrate, reading physical books while listening to the text said aloud in an audiobook may help you to understand the written words, and you can listen in a car without getting carsick. The list of benefits goes on!

Join the Tech Café with Vision Australia and library staff from 10am to learn how to access audiobooks on your own smartphone, tablet, computer, or Envoy Connect from Vision Australia, so that you can download and listen to them at home. At 11am you can spend an hour listening to the audiobook of your choice with light refreshments provided. Extra devices will be available for those who need to borrow one.

If you or someone you know has trouble reading physical books, Ballarat Libraries and Vision Australia both offer large collections of audiobooks online for borrowers to access and invite anyone interested in learning more to come along.

Got to Hack on triple j for the full post.

We need to keep amplifying disabled voices, advocating, and raising awareness, especially for people with invisible disabilities so the burden of proof does not continue to fall on their shoulders. Having to keep providing evidence of a disability and fighting for simple accommodations causes so much undue stress when we could all be having a fun time. We can do better!
