2020 Impact Stories: Innovation from a Global Pandemic

In the face of uncertainty and a global pandemic, the Ballarat community came together to back the locally created “GeVentor” project. The GeVentor is an Australian designed and manufactured ventilator developed as a response to COVID-19. The unit is easy to use, has simple start-up procedures but with additional, more sophisticated functionality. It’s highly robust which means it can be transported and used in regional and remote environments.

Our Community Bank worked with the Committee for Ballarat, Ballarat Health Services, Gekko Medical (Gekko Systems) and the broader community to provide the gap needed to secure additional Government funding.
“Gekko Medical is extremely thankful for the investment - without investors none of this would have been possible. The new med tech would not been born.
The initial investment helped us get further Government support. Thanks to the Community Bank we were able to put Ballarat on the map”.

This is Sandy.

He lives in Ballarat. He's co-founder of Gekko Systems manufacturing.

And he invented a portable ventilator.

In his backyard shed. In less than seven days.

He had some help from a local anaesthetist and a 3D printer business.

A few pieces of equipment were donated from the hospital to make sure it would work with a standard set-up.

And a Victorian Government development grant helped to cover the early costs.

By the end of the week, a balloon was hooked up to the scratch-made ventilator, inflating and deflating, just as a lung would.

Since then it's been fast-tracked through approval, with over 150 on order already.

And because Sandy's design is fully portable and can run off a car battery, it could change the game in developing countries.

It's projects like these that demonstrate the ingenuity of Victorian manufacturing.

And we'll back them all the way.

Gekko’s innovation and design team, led by Sandy Gray, is delighted to announce that Gekko Medical has received an order from the Victorian State Government for 170 ventilators.

The order follows permission for the GeVentor to progress into manufacture. The GeVentor is the first ventilator to progress this far through the exemption process. Minister for Industry Support and Recovery Martin Pakula made the announcement: “Creating a local ventilator industry in a matter of just months is testament to the excellence and agility of Victorian manufacturers.”

Victoria’s world-leading manufacturers have created a ventilator production industry from scratch with Ballarat’s Gekko Systems to start making the country’s first Australian-designed machines within weeks.

Prior to Stage 3 lockdowns in Ballarat, the GeVentor underwent usability testing in collaboration with BIRCH, Deakin University, and anaesthetist Doug Paxton in the medical training facility at Ballarat Base Hospital.

Simulation dummy, “Sim Man”, was used to provide a real-life responsive environment. Medical staff including ICU nurses were trained in the use of the GeVentor by Doug Paxton and then given various patient scenarios and asked to apply the GeVentor ventilator to respond to patient symptoms. The process both proved up the ease of use of the unit and provided some great insight into how the usability of the device could be streamlined.

Gekko Medical and our collaborators continue to work hard and are getting ready to start manufacturing. The collaboration group of organisations are keen to see this flexible and relatively sophisticated mandatory, invasive ventilator have the opportunity to in a global humanitarian environment.
