Your horse’s joints are incredible structures. At first glance, horse joints appear quite simple. A joint is any part of the skeleton where two or more bones meet and enable your horse to move.

However, below the surface, your horse’s joints are far more complex. For those who love science and trivia, did you know that your horse’s skeleton contains three different types of joints?

1️⃣ Fibrous joints: these are fixed joints that don’t move at all, like the skull.
2️⃣ Cartilaginous joints: connected by cartilage, these joints allow for limited movement, such as the vertebrae in your horse’s spine.
3️⃣ Synovial joints: lubricated by synovial fluid, these joints are the shock absorbers in your horse’s body. Think of the fetlock, knee, and hock.

While horse joint supplements are beneficial for all joints, it is the synovial joints that require supplementation the most, regardless of your horse’s activity level.

With supplementation, your horse’s synovial joints are supported to remain strong, flexible, and supple for many years to come. To find out more about supporting your horse's joint health, please head to 👉 https://au.4cyte.global/horses

Canine osteoarthritis is a common condition that creates painful joints and makes moving difficult. It usually develops over time causing inflammation in one or more joints.

Dogs may "slow down" as part of aging and this change in activity can be missed signs of joint pain. Regular check ups with your veterinarian will help identify early symptoms of joint pain, so a treatment plan can be initiated, giving your dog many more happy, carefree years.

Signs your dog may be suffering from osteoarthritis are:

✅ Stiffness upon waking
✅ Stiffness or lameness after exercise
✅ Reduced willingness to play
✅ Reduced eagerness for walks
✅ Difficulty climbing or descending stairs
✅ Constant licking of joints

If you have any concerns, please see your veterinarian.

There’s a common skeletal condition in dogs that all owners should educate themselves about – it’s called hip dysplasia.

Affecting the hip joint, the ball and socket do not fit or develop properly, and they rub and grind instead of sliding smoothly. This results in deterioration over time and an eventual loss of function of the joint itself.

This causes pain and can drastically reduce a dog’s quality of life. Important signs to look out for include difficulty or reluctance rising, jumping, running or climbing stairs; lameness in the hind end, swaying “bunny hopping” gait, grating in the joint during movement, loss of thigh muscle mass, noticeable enlargement of the shoulder muscles as they compensate for the hind end, pain and stiffness.

If your dog shows any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately to get a joint assessment to prevent any further damage.

Riding and training at this time of year has a significant impact on equine joint care, with rising temperatures placing increased demands on your horse’s cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system.

Carefully managing your horse’s health and fitness, diligent attention to ground and training conditions, along with targeted joint care practices, can drastically reduce micro wear and tear injuries and keep your horse sound throughout summer and for many seasons beyond.

In horses that have existing injuries or less than ideal conformation, these practices are all the more important.

Do you have a different routine for your horse in Summer?

We are proud to again support the Waimeha Mandate Cup, the Karioi ride is the first race to kick off 'The Big Three' races for Distance Riding New Zealand - DRNZ.

There are some awesome loop rides, offering distances of 10, 20, 40, 80 and 120km, with stunning mountain views.

This trophy and event honours the legendary Waimeha Mandate, a stallion owned by Noel and Merle Ritchie. He is the forefather of many successful endurance horses, plenty of whom compete today. Mandate was campaigned between the mid 1980's and 1999, ridden by both Noel and his daughter Sharee. Mandate was renowned for his calm demeanour and holds the record for the most qualified kms in the history of NZ distance riding at 9300kms!

Good luck to all on the Anniversary Weekend of 24–25 January 2026, enjoy those incredible views of Mount Ruapehu.
