Biala - Ballina Biala Support Services Ltd provides services for children and adults living with disability.

Biala is an NDIS provider and also operates an independently funded school for young people with disability. For over 50 years, Biala has been supporting people with disability and their families to live the best lives possible. We provide a number of different services to assist people to access the community, engage socially with others, live independently, provide assistance with daily living, access supports to transition from school into employment, respite and a warm hydrotherapy pool. Big thanks to Nick Mercer and for hosting Biala’s CEO, Lisa Smith, on ‘Beats n Business’.

Lisa shared how the NDIS has been “a game changer for people with disability” giving individuals more choice, control, and confidence and spoke about what it means to create spaces where everyone truly belongs.

At Biala, our mission is to support every student and participant to thrive not just in classrooms, but in life. Conversations like this help us share that mission, celebrate inclusive employers like Ballina RSL, and invite more local businesses to become “safe employers.”

As Lisa said, “don't be afraid to talk about disability... support is there to help reduce the stigma and increase understanding."

Our Biala School students like to run canteens in the Grevillea Room... it always goes down a treat! From baking and setting up the stall to greeting customers and handling money, every step was a chance to practice real life skills. 🌟

At Biala, learning goes far beyond the classroom. It’s about confidence, independence, and giving students opportunities to shine in everyday experiences. And if that includes a few delicious treats along the way, even better! 💛

On World Smile Day, we’re celebrating the moments - big and small - that spark joy in the people we support every day.

At Biala Disability Support Services, we know that creative support is meaningful support.

For our NDIS participants, activities like painting aren’t just fun, they’re a powerful way to express emotion, build focus, and connect with others.

Each brushstroke brings confidence, choice, and moments of shared joy… and often, a big smile too.

For Hayden, this is more than a dip in the pool - it fosters greater independence and joy in movement, in a safe, supportive environment tailored to his needs.

We were pleased to welcome Professor Mark Halaki, Head of School and Dean of Health Sciences from Sydney Health, to UCRH this week. Yesterday Mark took the time to meet our staff over lunch, outline some exciting strategy updates, and see firsthand the impact our team is making in the Northern Rivers.

Today he'll be visiting our student placements at Uniting facility in Goonellabah and Biala - Ballina , connecting with our physio educator and students. It’s always great to have leadership on the ground, seeing the real work and real people who make it all happen.

Thanks for your support, Mark and we look forward welcoming you back again soon.

Biala is a local NDIS provider and independently funded school for young people with disability. For over 50 years, Biala has been supporting people with disability and their families to live the best lives possible.

We provide a number of different services to assist people to access the community, engage socially with others, live independently, provide assistance with daily living, access supports to transition from school into employment, respite and a warm hydrotherapy pool.

Our regular Getaways are also popular amongst local people seeking to take a short holiday and meet new friends.
