Your liver is the main organ that converts T4 hormone to T3. These hormones play a key role in your thyroid health. The thyroid is responsible for stimulating metabolism of the foods we eat. Clients will often talk to me about a slow metabolism or difficulty with weight gain. Often a major factor in why people find it difficult to maintain a healthy weight is because of liver congestion. When the liver is congested, our thyroid function will be affected. Liver health is key to maintaining a happy thyroid!

Cytokines tests can be ordered to check which branch of the immune system is overactive and this is done via a blood test. The balance between these 4 immune T cell types plays an important role in the overall strength of your immune system. Inflammation in 1 of these T immune cells can lead to suppression in other T cells.
I recommend this test for those with autoimmune diseases or those with ongoing issues with their immune system. It is an accurate way to see how the immune system responds to intervention.

Immune System Overview:

White blood cells (leukocytes) are immune cells that help us defend against foreign invaders and infections. Produced in bone marrow and develop into different cells including lymph cells. T cells are a type of white blood cells. T cells are the main cell types fighting bacterial and virus invasions.

Differentiations of T cells:

Th1 cells - immunity against viruses and bacteria

Th2 cells - immunity against parasites and allergic reactions

Th17 cells - immunity against fungi

T regulatory cells - immunosuppression

Image your immune system is like a tree and each of these types of T cells are branches on the tree. Together the work to create a healthy immune system that is able to balance each of these branches. Overtime the imbalance of these branches results in poor immune response.

Prolonged stress can trigger the body into a Th1 cell dominance.

Imbalances in blood sugar levels can trigger overactive Th2 cells.

Long term - a strong immune system is dependant on maintaining a healthy balance of these branches - T cells.

3 tips to support your immune system:

1. Balance blood sugar levels
2. Lower stress - like low intensity exercise, yoga, healthy diet and herbal/nutritional supplementation.
3. Acupuncture - reported to balance Th1/Th2 ratio to help pain relief, fertility, endometriosis and strengthen immunity. Acupuncture is thought to cause a physical response in nerve cells promoting the release of cytokines.

It can often feel overwhelming with so much available information about health.
My approach to improving health is a 3 step process. Step 1: Improve liver function & detox pathways. Step 2: Reduce adrenal fatigue & the effects of the stress response. Step 3: Strengthen digestive function.
Each of these steps involves specific & simple ways to get the best out of your body. In my experience the health benefits are incredible. Disease will manifest in different systems of the body depending on the individual, if your basic systems are working effectively then this lowers inflammation which leads to more energy, better mood, improved sleep, happier life.

As a Acupuncturist, I see many people wanting to improve their health. Good health is simple, fun, rewarding & an incredible journey of self discovery. This isn’t some new age trend. What I am talking about is ‘stress verses relaxation’. From a very simplistic perspective, a cell in the body can only do one of 2 things - GROW or PROTECT. Stay in stress or fully function. This isn’t something that is out of our control. This is a learnt behaviour. Stress is something that slowly builds within the body & is the common denominator in any serious disease.

Each person is unique. There is no guarantee a healthcare approach that works for one individual will work for another. And so, it is very important to quiet the mind, relax the body and pay attention to what is needed. The human body is an incredibly well-designed vehicle. When in its natural state, it is capable of maintaining good health. When it is out of balance the body will communicate the difficulty. I am experienced in attentive, body-based listening techniques that identify the root of the problem and how to encourage the body to heal itself. This approach is one of discovery for both of us – practitioner and patient. It is interactive, therapeutic and helps us both recognise what type of treatment will encourage your body to deeply relax.

It is important to me that you are the determiner of your health, to ensure you maximise your growth and development. For that reason, I develop individual treatment plans or self-care programs to support your goals. Plans and programs may include nutritional information, strength/flexibility programs and relaxation techniques that aim to provide the resources necessary to feel self-empowered.
