Saying ‘I’m NOT OK’ without feeling like a burden

**CONTENT WARNING: DEPRESSION AND SUICIDAL THOUGHTS**

In the spirit of RUOK, I want to share a different kind of resource to most you probably came across last week. This is a letter template for anyone ready to take the courageous leap of letting a loved one in on your mental illness. I’ve designed it with depression and suicidal thoughts in mind, but you can adapt it in whatever way works for you.

I know from personal experience that this can be the single most difficult thing to share with a loved one. How to express the truth of your experience whilst worrying about the other person's reactions and the impacts on them or your relationship can be legitimately terrifying. So here's my attempt at a basic set of prompts/script to help get you started, if you need it.

There is no need to include each dot-point or stick to the script. This is about hopefully making it as easy as possible for you to reach out, without having to slog through the barriers like ‘where do I begin? How do I make sure I don’t sound like I’m blaming them or feel like I’m “attention seeking”? What do I include to be proactive so I’m not worried about just “dumping hopelessness” on them?’

I hope this can be helpful for some of you out there. Attached you’ll find two templates, pre-filled with example answers which can be used or over-written as needs. Just follow the link and download the PDF, have a look at the text already there for inspiration and highlight to type your own input instead *don’t forget to ‘save changes’ when you close it:

1. A one page template for sharing your illness with someone when you’re really unsure what their reaction might be

2. A more extensive template for sharing your illness and inviting someone to be part of your support team

Please message if the file won't download for you and I'll message back with the PDF file directly =)

As the number of coronavirus cases rise across Australia, the level of anxiety within the community is increasing.
Feelings of worry and unease can be expected following a stressful event, such as the recent declaration of a global pandemic, however, it is important that we learn to manage our stress before it turns to more severe anxiety and panic.
