✨ Yesterday I had the privilege of speaking for the South Australian Branch of the APS ✨ to a truly wonderful group of psychologists.

We explored:
1️⃣ Understanding Neurodivergent-Affirming (NDA) Practice — from the environments we consult in, to the language we use, to the reports we write (and everything in between).
2️⃣ Balancing a Medical Model with NDA Practice — why this balance matters deeply, and how to manage the ongoing juggle between systems, families, and authenticity.
3️⃣ The Myths and Misconceptions of Neurodiversity — unpacking what it isn’t, and why shifting our lens changes lives.

It’s always such a privilege to connect with colleagues who care about doing this work well — moving beyond awareness to true acceptance and inclusion. 🌿

Thank you so much to my colleague .byron.psychologist from for inviting me over!

If you’re passionate about neuro-affirming practice, you can keep learning with me through Nurturing Sparkles — where we share short, practical, affirming videos and resources for psychologists, teachers, and parents supporting neuro-sparkly kids. 💛

Im so incredibly proud to share that the 2025 event raised $65,000 for our local kids in our local hospitals.
These funds will be used to provide sensory supports, and specialist equipment to reduce pain and fear and anxiety in children requiring hospitalisation in our local area.

I’m beyond proud of our community for making this happen.

I was given an awesome opportunity to have a try at home with a device recently. And I admit, I was a bit slow to unpack it and set it up. I was worried it would be another ‘thing’ to add to the list.
So…
I asked my biggest kiddo to set it up with me and it’s been a game changer!
Nelli is a tasks reminder that you preset with tasks and times and it creates a list of things your child needs to do with options for stars or rewards. I didn’t actually add any rewards as the ‘ticking off the list’ component seems inherently satisfying for my two.

I haven’t found any need to use my frustrated mum voice and say “come on!!!!!!” since we started using it in the mornings.

It’s no magic wand. But it definitely is making our mornings smoother, calmer and my kiddos more independent. Which is an all-round win.

Calmer mornings mean calmer days for me as a mum and my kids too.

Thanks Nelli for the opportunity to give this a go!

📣 Does your school have a neurodiversity policy?

Most schools have disability or inclusion policies — but these often focus only on physical disabilities, leaving a major gap when it comes to supporting neurodivergent students.
This brand new Neurodiversity-Affirming Education Policy Template helps schools close that gap. It’s editable, practical, and grounded in current best practice for inclusive, strengths-based education.
✅ Neuro-affirming language throughout
✅ Includes examples of reasonable adjustments, ILP templates, and PSG agendas
✅ Reviewed by a legal professional (but please seek your own independent legal advice before use)
Empower your staff, affirm your students, and lead your school community forward.
