For the 1 million + Australians each year who battle with Depression, we are thrilled the Australian government will soon offer rebates for rTMS therapy, a fast and effective antidepressant treatment that gives hope in particular to those who do not respond to medications. Australia will join countries such as The Netherlands, the USA and Canada in recognising rTMS as a viable therapy to be made available to more patients in need.

Recently the Australian Federal Government announced in the budget significant funding towards mental health initiatives, including $288.9m to approve and MBS item for the highly effective antidepressant treatment repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS).

Our speech pathologist, Benjamin Ady, is working on putting together a presentation about Auditory Processing and Auditory Processing Disorder. Auditory Processing Disorder is an umbrella term for difficulties with a range of specific Auditory Processing skills. One skill that some people struggle with is understanding rapid speech. We live in a fast-paced world, and sometimes when we get in a rush, we naturally start to speak much faster. Children and adults with Auditory Processing Difficulties may find it more difficult than others to understand what’s being said when the speaker is in a rush. Benjamin found this fascinating graph outlining the average speaking speed of the 5 most recent U.S. presidents. There is clearly a wide range for typical speaking speeds, with Ronald Reagan speaking nearly twice as fast as Donald Trump.

If your child, partner, or interlocutor is having trouble understanding you, try slowing the speed of your spoken language by 10% and see if that helps. If you suspect that you or your child has Auditory Processing Difficulties, call (03) 9816 8811 to schedule an initial consultation.

A burgeoning area of research within the field of Neuroscience and Psychology is the importance of sleep, and its role in influencing various aspects of cognition such as focus, concentration and general health.

One recent article has highlighted some important and tangible recommendations to improve the sleep quality of children and teenagers, focusing on the removal of screen-based media consumption prior to sleep.

The recommendations are provided in the image below, and are further discussed here: http://neurosciencenews.com/sleep-development-digital-devices-7874/.

rTMS, or Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is a method of neuromodulation which has been researched for its application among depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and other mental health disorders.

Despite mounting evidence of the success of rTMS as a treatment option for those experiencing treatment resistant depression, there has been a lack of access for those seeking the treatment in Australia. However, many Australian psychiatrists are aguing in support of improved access to rTMS therapy in Australia.

Learn more about the current state of rTMS by listening to the brief report here: http://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/am/psychiatrists-push-for-depression-treatment/9072870

An awesome message not just for teachers, but for all of us who interact with children!

Our fantastic speech pathologist, Benjamin, is back with more excellent information to pass on. He has been reading Paul Madaule's book on listening, auditory training, and the Tomatis method, and has selected some quotes which stand out as useful and insightful:

• “Music fulfills a human need as fundamental as the need to eat.”
• “In my opinion, the ear infection is the single greatest cause of learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders.”
• “There is no such thing as knowing too many nursery rhymes.”
• “Singing is one of the most beautiful talents we possess. … But how many of us sing? We did sing earlier on, long ago, but something happened and we stopped.”
“[Upon entering school] children will be required to sit still and be quiet--to stop using their bodies and voices. This is unfortunate as the most efficient way of stimulating their ears and nervous systems is by using their bodies and voices. ... As for play, it will have to wait until recess, after school, weekends, and vacations.”
• “The cochlear vestibular system of the inner ear must be viewed as a single apparatus doing one job—analysing movements—and not as two different entities with separate functions. The cochlea specialises in faster oscillatory movements. The vestibular system is in charge of slower movements.”
• “Years of work with children has led me to conclude that attention span is the ability to listen (well) for a prolonged period of time; it is ‘listening plus a time factor.’ The best way I know of improving attention span is to work on listening.”
• “Music that makes the body rock is hardly a novelty; it exists in all cultures and has acquired a sacred or magical connotation in many civilisations.”
