Our fantastic speech pathologist, Benjamin, is back with more excellent information to pass on. He has been reading Paul Madaule's book on listening, auditory training, and the Tomatis method, and has selected some quotes which stand out as useful and insightful:
• “Music fulfills a human need as fundamental as the need to eat.”
• “In my opinion, the ear infection is the single greatest cause of learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders.”
• “There is no such thing as knowing too many nursery rhymes.”
• “Singing is one of the most beautiful talents we possess. … But how many of us sing? We did sing earlier on, long ago, but something happened and we stopped.”
“[Upon entering school] children will be required to sit still and be quiet--to stop using their bodies and voices. This is unfortunate as the most efficient way of stimulating their ears and nervous systems is by using their bodies and voices. ... As for play, it will have to wait until recess, after school, weekends, and vacations.”
• “The cochlear vestibular system of the inner ear must be viewed as a single apparatus doing one job—analysing movements—and not as two different entities with separate functions. The cochlea specialises in faster oscillatory movements. The vestibular system is in charge of slower movements.”
• “Years of work with children has led me to conclude that attention span is the ability to listen (well) for a prolonged period of time; it is ‘listening plus a time factor.’ The best way I know of improving attention span is to work on listening.”
• “Music that makes the body rock is hardly a novelty; it exists in all cultures and has acquired a sacred or magical connotation in many civilisations.”
