This week, we’re highlighting Dr Tao Geng, a valued member of our GP team known for her calm, attentive and methodical approach to care.

Dr Geng brings a strong procedural skillset to her GP work, with particular capability in both women’s health procedures and skin-related treatments. She is confident in managing a wide range of in-clinic procedures, offering patients the convenience of having assessment and treatment carried out within their regular general practice setting.

Her approach is precise and methodical. Patients value her steady manner, attention to detail and the way she clearly explains what to expect before, during and after a procedure. While she is highly skilled technically, she also ensures patients feel comfortable and informed throughout.

Dr Geng believes procedural care works best when it is part of an ongoing GP relationship — allowing for appropriate follow-up, monitoring and continuity over time.

Not every health concern fits neatly into one specialty.

This week we’re introducing Dr Amanda Khor, General Medicine Physician and Geriatrician at Bangor Medical Centre.

Many patients aren’t quite sure when they need a General Medicine specialist. In simple terms — it’s often when there are multiple medical conditions interacting, unclear diagnoses, complex medication regimens, or repeated hospital presentations without clear long-term coordination.

Dr Khor commonly assists with:
• Multiple chronic conditions requiring oversight
• Complex diagnostic questions
• Medication reviews and rationalisation
• Comprehensive geriatric assessments
• Functional or cognitive decline in older adults

What makes General Medicine different is the whole-picture lens. Rather than focusing on one organ system, Dr Khor steps back and looks at how everything connects — conditions, medications, mobility, cognition, supports at home — and builds a structured plan around that. As a Geriatrician, she also brings additional expertise in the care of older adults, particularly where independence, safety, memory or frailty are becoming concerns for families.

Importantly, Dr Khor bulk bills the first two visits per referral, making specialist assessment more accessible at the initial stage of investigation and planning.

Patients often notice her measured, comprehensive approach — consultations are thorough, methodical and centred on practical next steps, with clear communication back to the referring GP. If you or a family member have been navigating complex or overlapping health issues, a General Medicine review may be the missing piece.

Regular health assessments are an important part of maintaining long-term wellbeing. At Bangor Medical Centre, our GPs offer Medicare-funded health checks including the 45–49 year old health assessment and the 75+ health assessment.

These structured reviews support early identification of risk factors, chronic disease screening, medication reviews, and personalised care planning.

Where needed, our GPs work closely with our onsite General Physicians and Geriatric Specialists, ensuring coordinated care for more complex or age-related health needs — with multiple practitioners currently offering immediate availability. The first 2x visits per referral are BULK-BILLED to ensure easy access of care.

Speak with our team to book your health assessment and take a proactive step toward your ongoing health. These appointments are available to be booked online.

Managing a chronic condition? A structured plan can make all the difference.

For patients living with ongoing health conditions, February is a good time to check in and ensure your care is organised, coordinated, and up to date.

A GP Chronic Condition Management Plan (GPCCMP - Care Plan) is designed for people with chronic or complex conditions that require ongoing care. It allows your GP to map out your health goals, treatments, and support team in a structured way.

What’s typically covered?
• A review of your current medical conditions
• Agreed health goals and priorities
• Planned treatments and monitoring
• Referrals to eligible allied health services
• Coordination with specialists where required

Care plans can also make you eligible for Medicare-supported allied health visits each calendar year, depending on your circumstances. They’re particularly helpful if you’re juggling multiple appointments, medications, or health concerns — helping everyone involved in your care stay on the same page.

If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible, speak with your GP or ask our reception team about booking a longer appointment to discuss. Proactive planning today can support better health outcomes over time.

To organise a care plan review or assessment, contact your practice or book online.

National Eating Disorders Awareness Week

This week is a reminder that eating disorders are serious, complex health conditions — and they don’t always look the way people expect.

They can affect people of any age, gender or background. Sometimes the signs are subtle: changes in eating patterns, anxiety around food, withdrawal from social situations, or a growing preoccupation with weight or body image.

Early, compassionate support can make a meaningful difference.

At Bangor Medical Centre, care is centred around the whole person. Depending on individual needs, support may involve:
• GP-led care and long consultations for comprehensive assessment
• Chronic disease management and care planning
• Referrals to psychologists, psychiatrists and dietitians
• Endocrinology input where metabolic or hormonal factors are relevant
• Ongoing, coordinated follow-up to support recovery

We understand that taking the first step can feel overwhelming. Our role is to provide a safe, respectful space to talk — without judgement and without pressure. If you or someone you care about may benefit from support, consider booking a longer consultation to discuss concerns in confidence.

Awareness starts with conversation. 💙
What’s one way we can help create a more supportive environment around body image and food in our communities?

Immunisation remains one of the most effective ways to protect children from preventable diseases. At Bangor Medical Centre, we provide childhood vaccinations as part of our commitment to family health and community wellbeing.

Our general practitioners follow the National Immunisation Program Schedule and maintain accurate vaccination records for every child. Parents can discuss any concerns about vaccine timing, side effects, or catch-up schedules during appointments.

We understand that keeping track of vaccination milestones can feel overwhelming. Our team provides reminders and clear information to help families stay up to date with their child's immunisation journey.

If you're unsure whether your child's vaccinations are current, our reception team can assist with checking records and scheduling appointments.

Have you reviewed your child's immunisation schedule recently?

WEDNESDAY SPECIALIST SPOTLIGHT

Hormones influence far more than we often realise — from energy levels and metabolism to bone health and weight changes.

This week we’re introducing Dr Thaw Dar Htet, Endocrinologist and Weight Management Physician at SMSG.

Dr Htet commonly assists patients with thyroid disorders, diabetes, PCOS, osteoporosis and medically supervised weight management. Many patients are referred after noticing persistent fatigue, unexplained weight changes, irregular cycles or abnormal hormone results that require specialist review.

During appointments, patients often notice her structured yet supportive approach. She carefully reviews blood results, discusses how hormones interact within the body, and works collaboratively to outline realistic, individualised management pathways. Conversations are practical and evidence-based, with a focus on long-term metabolic health rather than quick fixes.

Hormonal conditions can feel complex — clarity makes all the difference.

If you’ve been referred or would like to enquire about an appointment with Dr Htet, our team is here to assist.

📞 Contact the practice or visit our website: www.smsg.au to book or enquire.

Myth: You can only visit a medical centre if you have an appointment booked in advance.

Fact: Many medical centres offer walk-in services or accommodate urgent care needs on the same day. While pre-booked appointments help ensure continuity of care with your regular doctor, clinics understand that health concerns do not always follow a schedule.

Here is what happens behind the scenes:
• Reception teams assess urgency and availability throughout the day
• Doctors may adjust schedules to fit in urgent cases when clinically appropriate
• Telehealth options can provide timely advice without requiring travel
• After hours care may be available depending on the clinic's operating model

If you are unwell or concerned, it is always appropriate to contact your medical centre directly. The team can guide you on the best way to access care based on your situation.

Have you ever needed urgent care and were unsure where to turn?
