There is a common misconception in the IVF world relating to patients believing that because they have had genetic testing performed on their embryos that the embryos are “normal” and the process “fixes their embryos”.

INCORRECT. Genetic testing doesn't "correct" chromosomally abnormal embryos, it simply allows couples to avoid transferring them.

Genetic testing is used to identify abnormal embryos, so that only embryos capable of producing a healthy pregnancy are used.

In Australia it is currently illegal to choose the gender of an IVF baby, unless based on medical grounds to avoid genetic conditions associated with a particular gender.

All IVF clinics have strict guidelines with the process of s*x selection using PGS/PGD (pre-implantation genetic screening/diagnosis) to avoid the risk of transmitting a serious genetic condition to a child.

S*x selection is only justified in cases where it is in the child’s best interests to be born a specific s*x. For example, couples who may carry genes for muscular dystrophy, a health condition that only affects males. They may legally complete an IVF cycle for the purpose of producing a female child to exclude males affected with muscular dystrophy.

Compass Fertility provides PGS/PGD for patients requiring this service.

This video shows the first step of an embryo warming procedure. An embryo is warmed in preparation for a frozen embryo transfer. The embryo has been frozen on a device and stored in liquid nitrogen at -190°C.

To warm the embryo, it is taken out of the liquid nitrogen and immediately plunged into a warming solution at 37°C. It is then moved through a series of warming solutions which takes approximately 10 minutes. Following this the embryo is ready to be transferred back into the uterus and hopefully grow into a healthy baby.

Weight affects fertility in both men and women, so boys it’s about you too!

Men who are overweight may have poor s***m quality and are generally not as fertile as men who are a healthy weight. Every kilo counts so even making small healthy changes can make a difference to your s***m quality.

What is a blastocyct?

A blastocyct is an embryo that has split into two different cell types. There are beautiful bubbly cells around the outside of the embryo, these are called trophectoderm cells and go on to form the placenta. There is also a lovely, compacted blob of cells in the centre, this is called the Inner Cell Mass (ICM) and it goes on to form the baby.

A blastocyst is usually formed after 5 or 6 days of growth following fertilisation. This is when we transfer an embryo back to the uterus, as it has the potential to form a pregnancy.

Egg Freezing is a process that allows women to have their eggs frozen for future use. It involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, followed by surgery to collect them, then finally freezing by one of our scientists. The eggs can them be thawed and inseminated in the future.

There are two main reasons why women choose to freeze their eggs. They are grouped into social egg freezing or medical egg freezing.

Social Egg Freezing is when women choose to freeze their eggs before they are ready to start a family which gives them an option of using younger eggs to create a family in the future.

Medical Egg Freezing is usually after the diagnosis of a serious medical condition such as cancer which requires fertility damaging treatment. Your oncologist will often discuss this with you but it’s important that women are aware of this.
