Dispelling Skin Cancer Myths!
Many people delay having a skin check for various reasons, but don't let these skin cancer myths be one of them.
- Myth 1: Only old people get skin cancer
People can get skin cancer at any age. While skin cancer in children and adolescents is rare, the most deadly form of skin cancer — melanoma — is the most common type of cancer for Australians ages 20–30.

- Myth 2: Skin checks are painful
An examination of your skin using a dermatoscope is not at all painful or uncomfortable. Skin checks take a matter of minutes and they are non-invasive.

- Myth 3: People don't die from skin cancer anymore
Australia has some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and it kills around 2000 Australians each year. That means you're more likely to die from skin cancer than you are in a car crash.

- Myth 4: People who tan easily and rarely burn will not get cancer.
False. There is no such thing as a healthy suntan. Any change in your natural skin colour is a sign of skin damage. Evidence suggests tanning greatly increases your risk of developing skin cancer.

Thinking about booking a skin check and unsure what to expect?

☀ It's recommended that you perform a self-examination every three months and about a week before your first skin check. This way you can tell your Dr about any spots of concerns or keep track if anything changes.
☀ A skin check takes around 10–30 minutes. Your doctor will begin by assessing your skin cancer risk factors by asking questions such as if you have had a family member with skin cancer.
☀ The doctor will use a hand-held magnifying device called a dermatoscope to examine the epidermis and the layers below it.
The examination will include your scalp, neck, head, back, fingers, and nails. The doctor will even check areas of your body that don't typically get much sun, such as between your toes and behind your ears. The doctor will not check your breasts or ge****ls unless you have indicated you have an area of concern that you would like them to examine.
☀If your doctor finds a suspicious spot or lesion, they may take a biopsy. The doctor will take a small sample of your skin to a laboratory for diagnosis. The doctor will call you back to the skin cancer clinic to provide the biopsy results and discuss any necessary further action.
