💜 Purple Day 💜

Today we wore purple (and enjoyed some purple cupcakes 🧁) at AFM to raise awareness of epilepsy.

This is something that touches our team personally, with one of our staff members having a child with treatment-resistant epilepsy. It’s a reminder of how important awareness and understanding really are.

A small way for us to acknowledge a condition that affects many families in our community.

10,000 Tasmanians cared for 🎉

In just over 18 months, more than 10,000 people from our community have now walked through our doors and trusted our team with their healthcare. 💚

Each of these patients represents a story — newborns coming in for their very first check-up, patients arriving worried and leaving reassured, difficult conversations, good news, and many consultations filled with relief — and with plenty of laughs along the way.

We've loved helping our community and building relationships with all 10,000 of you. Every day we’re reminded that being a GP clinic is about much more than medicine. It’s about being part of people’s lives and part of a community.

To every Tasmanian who has trusted us with their care — thank you. 💚

This milestone makes us so proud to look back at where we've grown from; two sibling GP's with a shared dream to make a different type of GP clinic. From ripping out old flooring, renovating, our first trip to officeworks, to now having served 10,000 Tasmanian's — what a journey! 💚

We’re incredibly proud to be part of this community and are pleased to still be welcoming new patients as we continue caring for the people of Hobart in the years ahead.

💚🌿 Welcome Dr Aram Cox – now seeing patients! 🌿💚

We’re thrilled to introduce Dr Aram Cox, the third of three new doctors to join us in the past fortnight at Australian Family Medical and the Australian Family Medical Skin Cancer Centre at 25 Davey St, Hobart.

Here’s a little about Dr Cox:

Dr Aram Cox graduated from the University of Tasmania in 2018 and completed several years of hospital training across a broad range of medical and surgical specialties at the Royal Hobart Hospital and Frankston Hospital in Victoria. He also undertook two years of training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and that experience he now brings into his work in General Practice.

Aram has a strong interest in skin cancer detection and management, procedural medicine, men’s health, chronic disease management, workers’ compensation, and paediatrics. He is committed to providing practical, evidence-based and patient-centered care to patients of all ages.

Outside of work, Aram enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing golf, and supporting Richmond.

🌿💚 Welcome Our New Doctor – Dr Victoria Ims! 💚🌿

We’re excited to welcome Dr Victoria Ims, the second of three new doctors joining us this fortnight.

Good news: with our new doctors starting, we’ve opened up more appointments, including for new patients. 🌱🟢

As a locally owned Tasmanian clinic, we’re here for our community and with increased GP capacity, it’s now a little easier to get an appointment when you need one. If you or your family have been waiting for a spot, now’s a great time to book. 💚

Meet Dr Victoria Ims:

Victoria is a Tasmanian local who completed her medical degree at the ANU in Canberra, graduating in 2022. She returned home to Hobart in 2024, working across a range of roles at the Royal Hobart Hospital.
During her hospital training, Victoria particularly enjoyed her time in paediatrics and emergency medicine.

Victoria is looking forward to the variety that General Practice offers, as well as the opportunity to build long-term relationships with patients and to support their ongoing care.
She has a special interest in preventative, women’s and children’s health.

Outside of work, Victoria enjoys hiking, trail running and camping in Tasmania’s beautiful outdoors and trying out new recipes at home.

🌿💚 Exciting News at Australian Family Medical! 💚🌿

It’s a super exciting fortnight for us — we have three new doctors joining the team, and today we’re thrilled to welcome the first!

🎉 Dr Alan Tam starts TODAY! 🎉
He’ll be working five days a week and is now taking new patients.
(He settled in quickly today— amazing what a warm hello and a good coffee can do 💚)

👇 About Dr Alan Tam:
Dr. Alan Tam, born in Canada, spent a significant portion of his early life in Hong Kong. He is fluent in both English and Cantonese.

Dr. Tam graduated from the University of Toronto in 2009. He later moved to Australia, where he earned his medical degree from the University of Queensland in 2013. Since then, Dr. Tam has been committed to providing compassionate care to the Tasmanian community.

His experience at the Tasmanian Health Service includes serving as a registrar in the intensive care unit at the Launceston General Hospital and the aero‑medical retrieval service. Dr. Tam completed his GP training in Echuca Moama in 2021. This experience provided him with valuable insights into rural healthcare challenges.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Tam enjoys travelling, cooking, and exploring food culture. When he’s not at work, you may find him trying new restaurants with his partner.

💚🎉 Happy New Year from Australian Family Medical! 🎉💚

New Year’s resolutions? ✨ Help us reach anyone in the Hobart community looking for a family-owned GP Clinic taking new patients - we’d love to help keep Hobart healthy in 2026! 🩺

And what a year 2025 was!

Drs Emma & Jay Shoemaker and the rest of the team at AFM are so grateful for the year that has just been. We’re so proud to have grown from a team of 5 GPs this time last year to a team now about to hit 16 doctors. 👏 Over the year we’ve grown from one nurse to five and from three support staff to a team of 6 (and still counting!). 🌱

All this growth means we have grown our books too, with now almost 9,000 patients since our opening in August 2024. 😲 We’re so proud that we’ve helped this many people to find a GP in the day and age of it being so challenging to find up-to-date, evidenced based, modern GPs who are taking new patients. 🥳 💚

2025 was a tremendous year for us, with opening the AFM Skin Cancer Centre☀️, growing our team, acing accreditation ✅, taking our first registrars (training doctors to be GPs), hosting 6 medical students 🎓 and so much more.

We’re so thankful for the support of our friends, family and community during this journey. 🙏

✨ 2026 is looking like it’s set to be another huge year, with three new GPs starting within the next month, Dr Emma welcoming a new family member soon 👶, and something exciting starting on the horizon... 👀

PS. We’re still glad to report that Jay and Emma’s sibling banter remains strong despite the whirlwind 17 months since we opened - no family bonds have been broken in the making of AFM! 😅

🩺☀️ Welcome Dr Boris Tan to the team at AFM Skin Cancer Centre! 🌟

We’re beyond thrilled to share that Dr Boris Tan will be joining the team at Australian Family Medical. Starting with us next week, we’re excited that our community will soon be able to book skin cancer checks with Dr Tan. 🎉

🧴☀️We’re still taking new patients for skin checks!
We also have minimal waiting times (you might even be able to book in on the day!). Since our opening at the start of September this year we’re thrilled to have grown the team to 5 doctors doing skin cancer work, and watch this space for the next few!

👨‍⚕️ About Dr Boris:
Boris graduated from the University of Queensland. He has worked in various States and in various roles around Australia prior to moving to Tasmania in 2014 to work in General Practice. 💚

Boris has a passion for teaching, regularly tutoring medical students at the University of Tasmania, and supervising GP trainees. He received the RACGP Tasmanian Supervisor of the Year award in 2025. 🎓🥇🏆

He founded, and continues to run, Tassie Doctors, a local group aimed at bringing together and fostering communication and collegiality amongst doctors of all specialties in Tasmania. 🌐

Although he has recently decided to take a step back from generalist work to focus on Skin Cancer and proceduralist work, he remains dedicated to providing empathetic, evidence based, patient centred care. 🥳

In his spare time, Boris enjoys playing and coaching futsal, supporting his soccer ⚽team, enjoying good food with friends and family, and cuddling his 3 cats! 🐾

Dr Boris will be open for skin check bookings on the 18th of November. 📆

In Hobart, it’s not unusual to have a 12 month wait for skin check appointments and early detection saves lives so these delays compromise on care. ⏳ 😓

💚 👋 Dr Meg Walker is now offering skin cancer services at AFM Skin Cancer Centre 👩‍⚕️💚

Things have been really busy lately at AFM! 👏 Our Skin Cancer Centre has been open for just over a month now and it’s been a big one! We’re thrilled to be offering full skin checks, spot checks and skin cancer lesion removals to our Hobart Community. We’re still taking new patients with no waiting lists and we have appointments available within just a few days!

Early skin cancer detection saves lives, that’s why we’re excited that Dr Meg Walker (a familiar face from AFM GP Clinic) is joining the team at the Skin Cancer Centre!

Get to know Dr Meg 👩‍⚕️
Dr Meg graduated from King’s College London in 2018 and brings a broad range of experience from hospital medicine across the UK, including acute and emergency care, psychiatry, anaesthetics, and various surgical specialties. 🚨🏥

In 2021, she made the move to Melbourne, 🌏 working in both emergency and intensive care medicine across metropolitan and regional Victoria, before moving to Tasmania in 2024. 💚 Since then, Meg has been enjoying a mix of primary care work in Hobart and rural Tasmania. 🌿

Alongside general practice, Dr Meg continues to work part-time in the Emergency Department at the Royal Hobart Hospital and contributes to medical education with the ACRRM. 📚 She is currently further advancing her skin cancer skills through postgraduate training with the Skin Cancer College Australasia. 🔎

Meg enjoys all aspects of general practice and values the variety it brings. 💚 She also has a keen interest in rural and emergency medicine, along with a passion for teaching and research. 🔬👩‍🔬

Outside of medicine, you’ll often find Meg at a live music gig 🎶, out scuba diving 🥽, hiking Tasmania’s trails 🥾, or running along the beach with her chocolate Labrador, 🐾Aggie.

🎉💚 Australian Family Medical Skin Cancer Centre – NOW OPEN! 💚🎉

The time is finally here, AFM is so excited to be opening our brand-new Skin Cancer Centre! 👏

It’s been a long journey, from taking the lease on the space below AFM 🔑, to finally beginning renovations 🛠 and now to having opened doors for the very first time! 🎉We couldn’t have imagined this when we first started our GP practice but now we’re thrilled to have our dedicated Skin Cancer Centre finally open! 🙌

With many new people following along now, we thought we’d take the time to introduce the AFM Skin Cancer Centre properly! We are a local, Tasmanian owned clinic, specialising in the detection, monitoring and management of skin cancer. 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ The Skin Cancer Centre is the expansion on the skin services we’ve already been offering upstairs at Australian Family Medical. 🎉 AFM first opened in August 2024 and is run by GP siblings, Drs Emma and Jay Shoemaker. 💚

The Skin Cancer Centre is located conveniently on the ground floor below our main GP surgery. You’ll find the same friendly faces, attention to detail and up-to-date medicine.🏥

Most convenient of all, we are taking 🚨 NEW PATIENTS 🚨 for skin cancer checks and being a new clinic we have amazing appointment availability, usually being able to book full skin checks within a matter of days. 🤯 With many skin cancer clinics around Hobart not taking new patients or having waiting lists over a year long, we’re so thrilled to be able to fill this gap in services for our community. 👏

Our skin doctors, Dr Ayush Srivastava, Dr Latika Verma and Dr Shaun Ewe all have extended training in skin cancer detection, monitoring and surgical management. 🎓We also have multiple familiar and new faces lined up to join this crew over the next 6 months! We are proud to have the latest technology and offer gold standard, up-to-date skin management. 🏅
