💚 WORLD DIABETES DAY 💚
Today we reflect on one of the most powerful medical breakthroughs in history and the ongoing journey of people living with diabetes, many of whom navigate life with a recognised disability.
In 1922, a hospital ward was filled with children in diabetic comas. Parents sat by their beds, preparing for the unimaginable. Then scientists moved from bed to bed with a new purified extract…..insulin
As they finished injecting the last child, the first began to wake.
Then another.
And another.
A room filled with grief transformed into a room filled with hope.
This discovery led by Dr Frederick Banting, Charles Best, James Collip and John Macleod changed type 1 diabetes from a fatal condition into a lifelong, manageable one. It also marked the beginning of recognising diabetes as a condition that brings daily challenges, accommodations, and support needs.
Today, many people with diabetes live with disability status, not because they are limited but because the condition demands constant vigilance, access to medication, and community understanding.
On World Diabetes Day we honour:
💙 the science that made life possible,
💙 the people living with diabetes and disability,
💙 and the strength it takes to manage a complex condition every single day.
At Knoxbrooke, we stand for inclusion, awareness, and support today and always.
