Marine Rescue Broken Bay

Marine Rescue Broken Bay Marine Rescue Broken Bay is a 100% volunteer organisation, dedicated to saving lives on the water, around Pittwater, Broken Bay and Offshore.

We rely on donations and the generosity of local businesses. The Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, established in 1937, was Australia’s oldest and largest volunteer maritime search and rescue organization. The Broken Bay Division, originally a foundation part of the Sydney region command, became a separate entity in 1947 under the leadership of Skipper Ray Weingott. Over the years, the Division operated from various bases, including Church Point, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, and from 1992 , the Royal Motor Yacht Club who kindly provided dedicated facilities and berthing for our rescue vessels. In 2005, the Division moved to its own premises at Bayview Boat Ramp, with support from Pittwater Council. On January 1, 2010, the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, and Volunteer Rescue Association unified to form Marine Rescue NSW. Over the years the Unit has provided radio coverage and rescue services and contributed to the establishment of further units at Brisbane Water, Hawkesbury, and a central Radio Centre, now located at Belrose. Currently, Marine Rescue Broken Bay operates two high spec rescue boats from a dedicated wharf at Bayview. The base was rebuilt in March 2023, featuring modern crew facilities and a purpose-built training space available for public hire. Approximately 100 volunteers support the local community, collaborating closely with NSW Police (Marine Area Command), Surf Life Saving, SES, NSW Ambulance, and NSW Maritime for maritime and flood response needs.

Own a boat?
It's time to check your marine flares for expired or unwanted one and safely take them to an approved collection point during January.

This collection program run by Transport for NSW and NSW Maritime provides the boating community with a safe, legal, and accessible way to dispose of marine flares. Marine flares don't go in any household or public bins.

Sometimes the unexpected happens. We were able to help this skipper whose engine started smoking, while he was 18 nm from home. With the engine now safe but not working and the vessel starting to take on water, our volunteers on BB30 towed the vessel back from upper Hawkesbury through Broken Bay and south through Pittwater, whilst the skipper focused on bailing, bilging and trying to plug the water ingress, With contant check-ins ensuring that safety of the boater and vessel remained paramount, we were able to return both safely to home and a local boat repairer. A good result and grateful skipper after 6hrs on the water!

The weather can look perfect at the ramp, but conditions can change quickly once you’re out on the water.
Before you head off, take a moment to check the forecast for the entire day, not just the morning. Knowing what’s coming can help you plan your trip, avoid rough conditions, and get home safely.
The Marine Rescue NSW app puts weather outlooks and alerts right in your pocket, so you’re never caught off guard.

2025 in review: Another record breaking year!
Across 46 bases from Point Danger to Eden and monitoring all the coast in between, our 3500 volunteer first responders are on call 24/7. In 2025 MRNSW attended to 105 maydays, returned nearly 10000 people safely to shore and conducted over 1700 search and rescues in Greater Sydney area alone.
Lessons from 2025? Over 60% of the incidents were fuel, battery or engine issues. So, before you go out next, plan, prepare, including contingency and check your vessel maintenance. Stay safe on the water!

Last Saturday Marine Rescue Broken Bay hosted training for 11 volunteers participating in a State Operations Group vessel induction and marine drills day. The day was spent learning to pack, unpack, setup, launch, steer and maintain the engines of various vessels and launch vehicles. This qualification continues to build on Marine Rescue's flood response capability, in readiness for statewide deployment, if SES/flood rescue conditions require.
Volunteers from inducted the team on the Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) setup and use. Members from Marine Rescue Tuggerah Lakes inducted trainees on the Multi Purpose Vessel (MPV) and additional volunteers from , participated in what turned out to be a scorchingly hot day! Thanks go to Dave Bowling - MRNSW Capability Manager, who oreganised and ran the event.

Tip of the week!

😄 If you know who we are, chances are fuel played a part…

Running out of fuel is one of the most common reasons boaters need a helping hand.

We always remind boaters to live by the Rule of 3 👇
One third of your fuel for the trip out
One third for the trip home
One third kept in reserve, just in case

It’s a simple habit that can save you time, stress, and an unexpected call for help.

You study... you practice.. you repeat drills.. you use every hour of water activity to refine your skills...
Our Marine Rescue volunteers dedicate many hours to not just helping boaters in trouble but to gaining and refreshing skills.
New qualifications are a well deserved outcome of lots of effort. Congratulations David Scharkie on successfully passing your crew operational assessment. Well done!.

Sometimes the unexpected happens. We were happy to help this family when their engine refused to start after anchoring at the beach, with a falling tide approaching. Smiling faces... safely back at the Marina ⚓🛟🛥️
