Marine Rescue Broken Bay

Marine Rescue Broken Bay Marine Rescue Broken Bay is a 100% volunteer organisation, dedicated to saving lives on the water, around Pittwater, Broken Bay and Offshore.

We rely on donations and the generosity of local businesses. The Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, established in 1937, was Australiaโ€™s oldest and largest volunteer maritime search and rescue organization. The Broken Bay Division, originally a foundation part of the Sydney region command, became a separate entity in 1947 under the leadership of Skipper Ray Weingott. Over the years, the Division operated from various bases, including Church Point, Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, and from 1992 , the Royal Motor Yacht Club who kindly provided dedicated facilities and berthing for our rescue vessels. In 2005, the Division moved to its own premises at Bayview Boat Ramp, with support from Pittwater Council. On January 1, 2010, the Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol, Australian Volunteer Coast Guard, and Volunteer Rescue Association unified to form Marine Rescue NSW. Over the years the Unit has provided radio coverage and rescue services and contributed to the establishment of further units at Brisbane Water, Hawkesbury, and a central Radio Centre, now located at Belrose. Currently, Marine Rescue Broken Bay operates two high spec rescue boats from a dedicated wharf at Bayview. The base was rebuilt in March 2023, featuring modern crew facilities and a purpose-built training space available for public hire. Approximately 100 volunteers support the local community, collaborating closely with NSW Police (Marine Area Command), Surf Life Saving, SES, NSW Ambulance, and NSW Maritime for maritime and flood response needs.

Congratulations to Craig Brown for obtaining his 5yr service pin. ๐Ÿ‘
We know that lives can be a really hard juggle and we are incredibly grateful for all those volunteers who chose our Unit as there place of service. Without each of you we would not have the strong team we have, out there supporting the safety of our local boating community.
A big thanks and well done!

Sometimes the unexpected happens! ๐Ÿซฃ
When an engine gear system suddenly decides not to cooperate and you are being blown by some fresh and rising winds towards the rocky shore, it is time to put the anchor in. โš“
So glad to have been able to assist this family back to Clareville, so they could get safely back to shore. A cheery wave goodbye - and possible 2 new future recruits?๐Ÿ›Ÿ

โš“It was a big morning yesterday, as Broken Bay's vessel masters from across all watches, came together to step through our updated training syllabus.
๐Ÿ“–Guided by our Unit Training Officer and Zone Training Manager, we stepped through the purpose of the changes, then broke into groups to review the new content and to make sure weโ€™re all aligned on the new standards and performance expectations.
Marine Rescue units train to AMSA requirements and also meet ASQAโ€™s RTO standards. The ongoing dedication of our volunteer training team and vessel masters ensure strong capability development of our entire unit team, ready to support the public out on the water! ๐Ÿ‹โ€โ™€
Thank you Julie for putting together a fabulous presentation and supporting activity.
Thanks skippers for giving up a Sunday morning to participate and lastly to Karen for the brecky rolls!

Marine Rescue NSW volunteers return almost 850 people to safety in February as demand remains high on the stateโ€™s waterways

Volunteer crews from Marine Rescue NSW completed to 404 search and rescue missions across the state in February, including 140 emergency responses, safely returning 847 people to shore.

The February total brings the number of missions performed over summer (December to February) to almost 1,700, highlighting the sustained demand placed on volunteers during the peak summer period.

Marine Rescue NSW Commissioner Todd Andrews said while volunteers stand ready to respond around the clock, many incidents could have been avoided with better preparation.

โ€œFebruary was another busy month for our volunteers, who responded to 404 incidents across NSW, including life-threatening emergencies,โ€ Commissioner Andrews said.

โ€œSixty per cent of responses were for engine, battery and fuel issues. These are largely preventable problems. Boaters must ensure their vessel is properly maintained, carry sufficient clean fuel including a reserve, and check their battery before heading out.

โ€œThere is a fine line between a great day on the water and a dangerous situation. Preparation and planning are critical,โ€ he said.

Commissioner Andrews said Marine Rescue NSW radio operators also played a vital role in keeping boaters safe.

โ€œIn February, our radio operators managed 18,864 calls, including nine MAYDAYs and five PAN PANs, and kept watch over 24,241 people on board 7,322 vessels that had Logged On.

โ€œLogging On is quick, simple and could save your life. Boaters can Log On 24 hours a day via the free Marine Rescue NSW app or on VHF Channel 16. When you Log On, our volunteers monitor your safe return. If you become overdue, a search can be initiated without delay.

โ€œIt only takes a minute to Log On, but it can save precious time in an emergency.โ€

Commissioner Andrews urged boaters not to become complacent with just under seven weeks still to run."
