I'm making a few changes to simplify my life and I just don't feel I'm doing justice to this vision. I'm going to focus on posting all things food and medicine over at my Farmacy Co page and combining my websites to make it all easier to manage.

As the farm establishes over the next 12 months and I am busier with growing, harvesting, establishing our food forest and all the other things that life throws at us, like teenagers and a day job (eek!). The FarmacyCo page will become more like a journal of my journey towards self sufficiency and micro herb farming on my 2 acres of unceded Waywurru land.

There is so much in my day that I would love to share like knowledge of the plants, how they grow, how to work with them and how we can honour them in our every day life. So for now, I'll be moving away from this page and posting more about my Farmacy Garden over at FarmacyCo, I do hope you join me there.

Very excited for one of the first mainland deliveries of Haksap plants also known as Honey Berries.

They will be a great addition to the food Forrest, planting is starting this winter finally after a slow start.

The Haskap Berry (Lonicera caerulea) is a member of the honeysuckle family and is sometimes referred to as the Blue Honeysuckle though it has to be said the shrub bears no resemblance to the honey suckle creeper found in Australian gardens.

It is known as the Haskappu Berry in Japan, Haskaps in Canada, Camerise in Quebec and Honey Berry in North America.

The name Haskappu means ‘’little presents on the end of branches” because they’re regarded as being delightful to eat – and are quite unlike any other fruit or berry. The taste is somewhere between a raspberry and a blueberry with a hint of black currant.

So many things take time. The tractor needed fixing and didn’t get done in time for last years planting, a water source was due to be drilled last week but got delayed until the end of months. The hoop house needs to be pulled down at its current home and transported to the new home.

My backyard in the interim rental looks like a full blown nursery of pots with all of my plants (over 100 fruit, nut, herb and shrubs) scattered in little clusters around the yard.

The first apothecary rose of the season. I’ve propagated a few of these for planting out next year as I build up my harvesting stock.

I’ll try and propagate some for sale once my row is full. It’s the best smelling rose, deep red and easy to grow in a pot.

Can’t wait to get these babies in the ground. I’ll do a little video and catalog of all of these medicinal herbs soon. Is 10 different types of mint too much? Asking for a friend 😉

If you are travelling through or visiting Canberra there is plenty of great places to visit for the fellow herb nerd.

I was there on a Wednesday and it was my birthday so I ventured to the Dairy Rd Precinct in Fyshwick for breakfast. I found a great cafe/foodstore called As nature intended while I waited for the local Apothecary to open.

Nourish and Breathe is tucked inside Building 3 in the Dairy Rd precinct across the way from the cafe, Renae Scott is the founder. It's an awesome business and a calming welcoming space, Renea grows a lot of her own herbs at the local community garden. I wish I had time on the way back to stop back in to check it out. The morning I came in Renea was wizzing up some delicious treats to serve customers and clients. She also has a wholefoods cafe running on a Thursday and Friday.

Next stop was to drop off some bunches of herbs for the 35th birthday celebrations at The Hierophant a Canberra institution. It's a treasure trove of information, advice and remedies. They run a lot of educational workshops and information sessions or talks with expert guest speakers on a wide range of topics as well as in house consultations.

So put these spots in Canberra on your list of places to visit.

Let’s talk about seed storage..

If you grow your own plants chances are you have a heap of seeds and seed packets.

I’ve found the best way to store them is in these photo storage boxes you can pick up from places like spotlight or Kmart. They are perfect for keeping vermin out and keeping them dry. I have an old 2 door glass fridge in the shed I keep all of my seeds in so they are temperature stable as well but you don’t need to go to that extent at home.

What’s the best way you’ve found to store your seeds?

Farm update 👨‍🌾🚜

Initial plan is done finally! In the next 2 weeks it’s time to start implementing the farm plan and get the herb beds established.
There is a lot to think about when starting from a blank canvas, from layout to services and buildings.
It’s easier and harder at the same time. Starting a design with established infrastructure has an anchor but often it’s been done with little thought to the environment and aspect.

Phase 1: building our machinery shed then working from the bottom of the property I’ve got the hoop house to go up, water bore to dig, fences to sure up, herb beds to prepare with compost and 500, irrigation to run and a little garden shed to build all before the summer planting because i’ve got the seeds in the hot house at the rental. Wishful thinking! Hopefully I can get an annual crop this year and after harvest I’ll green manure and work on building healthy soil.

Phase 2: preparing the orchard ready for planting out next autumn/winter.

Phase 3: house build.

We’ve got a 2 year timeline on these major projects.

I’ll do another post on the establishment of the production herb beds as there is a lot of info to share on the set up.

🌼 New post alert! 🌼

Do you know your true dandelion from the false one? If you look at the photos you find there is a difference with the leaves and the flowers, most notably is the fine hairs on the false leaves and the single hollow stem of the true dandelion.

We just published a post all about the incredible benefits of dandelions and how to use them in your daily life. Did you know that dandelions are a great source of vitamins and minerals, and can even help support healthy digestion and liver function? Plus, they're just so pretty to look at!

Once you've nailed the identification you'll be amazed at the long list of things you can do with them and what benefits they have. Head over to The Farmacy Garden Knowledge Bank to read all about it and let us know in the comments how you like to incorporate dandelions into your routine. 🌿
