My name is Ellen McNeil and I offer a unique counselling experience to all age groups of people experiencing a range of different life concerns. Sessions can either take place in my home studio or I travel across the region (75km maximum distance) and can meet for a coffee and a walk and talk. Once I get to know my clients a bit better, I tailor sessions to include therapeutic elements they are passionate about. Think self-love spell jars, designing blogs, hiking, cooking, art and crafts or even visiting a local farm to play and pat baby goats…..We can be pretty flexible, but I find this approach encourages conversation to flow easier and our therapeutic relationship grows without judgement or expectations. WHAT INSPIRED THE CREATION OF BRAVE YOUNG HEARTS AND WHY? After years of managing major events and hospitality venues in Melbourne I decided it was time to come home to North East Victoria and consider a career change. I have always been passionate about supporting my community and bringing mental health to the forefront of conversation. So, in 2018 I decided it was time to step up and take action and I started studying a Bachelor of Social Science majoring in Behavioural studies. Everything started to fall into place, and I was lucky enough to be employed by NESAY, an organisation that supports disadvantaged youth in the Ovens and Murray region. It was while working with NESAY that I found a real passion in mentoring and supporting youth and I felt that I was able to make meaningful connections with young people and work towards positive outcomes with relation to their mental health struggles and their ability to set and achieve goals. Once I graduated from my bachelor's I felt it was time for a new challenge and I joined Beyond Housing in Wodonga as the Team Leader. The work we did at Beyond Housing was challenging but rewarding. We supported the most vulnerable people in the community with advice and information around housing options. I also case managed clients who had recently been housed after years of experiencing homelessness and I supported them to address barriers that had previously prevented them from sustaining long term housing. Mental health was generally the stem to all the other issues these clients were experiencing. So, using a strengths based and trauma informed approach we worked together towards better wellbeing and mental health outcomes for them. I currently work with Upper Murray Family Care (UMFC) working with foster children and their families to support a successful foster care placement. The role sees me working one on one with the young people and providing them with guidance and mentorship they may not have experienced previously due to past trauma and family breakdown. Before I took on the role at UMFC I commenced studying a Masters of Counselling and Psychotherapy with the Australian College of Applied Professionals which I intend to graduate from in 2025. I knew I wanted to help people experiencing mental health concerns, but I wanted to do it my own way. I have lived experience with my own mental health issues which I am more than happy to share with anyone who is interested. I wish that when I was seeking support for my deteriorating mental health that a service like Brave Young Hearts was available to me because sometimes you don’t want to sit in a room with a stranger and tell them all of your problems while they are taking notes about your life! So please, reach out if this sounds like it's a good fit for you or if you would like to ask some further questions. Shared with Public
