Having just returned from an 8-day hike in the Tasmanian highlands (the Overland Track), I can truly say that I’m feeling more positive, light, and rejuvenated by the experience. This is in line with contemporary research that has consistently found time in nature (i.e., forest bathing) to be positively associated with mental health, a reduction in blood pressure and heart rate, as well as levels of stress hormones. Time in nature also positively influences gastrointestinal microbiota composition, with improvements seen in ecosystem richness and diversity, as well as helpful shifts in composition, such as reductions in pathobiont populations like Bacteroides. As clinicians, one of the interventions we should be promoting more to our patients, is time in nature - or what I call “nature leave”. This can be in bigger time blocks, such as the 8-days I just experienced, but even shorter time windows are beneficial. Some research suggests that just 2 hours per week in natural environments (e.g., parklands, gardens, national parks) is all that is required to obtain substantial health benefits. So get out there!

It’s been several months since we last joined together to Walk for the World – a global Walking Meditation where hundreds of thousands united in the energy of change. Since then, you’ve kept walking – alone and collectively – strengthening those bonds and signals of coherence.

Join us to Walk for the World once more on Sunday, April 21, at 10 a.m. EDT. No matter where you walk or who you’re with, let’s open our hearts and awareness to something greater than ourselves – and continue to emerge as a higher consciousness.

"Above all, do not lose your desire to walk. Everyday, I walk myself into a state of well-being and walk away from every illness. I have walked myself into my best thoughts, and I know of no thought so burdensome that one cannot walk away from it. But by sitting still, and the more one sits still, the closer one comes to feeling ill. Thus if one just keeps on walking, everything will be all right."
