Before searching for the right rehab centre you first need to be clear about what type of goals you are looking to achieve. For example, if you are addicted to multiple substances, you will need to determine which substance is impacting you most. And what behaviours are creating the major problems in your life. You also need to determine what success means to you. Will a month of being sober count as success to you? Or do you need to remain sober for longer to improve your chances of a full recovery. Our team will help you answers these questions and will help you find the path to recovery that is right for you.

It involves a period of time in which an individual stops using opioids in order to rid their body of any remaining toxins and manage withdrawal symptoms. At PRS, our medically-assisted approach to detox means we use medication to manage these withdrawal symptoms and reduce the risk of complications. Our medical professionals closely monitor all patients during the detox process to ensure their safety and comfort. In the last decade, the recreational use of fentanyl has increased considerably in Australia. Fentanyl belongs to the opioid category of drugs which are one of the most powerful pain relievers available to humankind. Despite being very useful in medicine, the black market for synthetic opioids like fentanyl has grown rapidly in recent years. It’s a scary situation because Fentanyl is 50 times more powerful than he**in, has greater addictive potential and toxicity. And is also cheaper to manufacture and, therefore, cheaper for the consumer, increasing the risk of overdose. If you, or someone you know, is struggling with an addiction to fentanyl, call PRS today.

Families and community can play an essential role in giving up alcohol and other drugs and avoiding relapse. Research shows advice or encouragement from family members is an important reason for giving up or reducing problematic substance use. However family and communities do not always have the right tools to support the individual in treatment, which is why services like PRS are so important. We provide both support and an emphasis on building, strengthening and repairing relationships as part of our healing work with patients.

A new research review has found a link between physical activity and reduced substance use among people in treatment for alcohol and drug abuse. The review found that participating in physical activity increases people's goals to be healthy; It can generate a 'euphoric'-type feeling; And it provides a good structure to daily lives. All things that can help us feel more in control of emotions and reduce any need for substances to manage daily life issues.

Coping with a loved one's battle with opioids can be tough, and communicating about it can come with a different set of challenges centred around stigma. Toward the beginning, families can "internalise stigmatising thoughts around substance abuse as they may feel ashamed and embarrassed or that they’ve failed as a loved one of that family member. But hopefully, they soon accept that substance abuse doesn’t equate to moral failure. It's just it's a disease, and like all other diseases, it comes with challenges that you need to work through.

If you or someone you love has been taking opioid medications for more than a week or two there is a chance of encountering withdrawal symptoms. The best way to avoid these uncomfortable symptoms is through a process known as tapering. Tapering off opioids is a gradual process of reducing doses over time until the medication is no longer needed. It is important to take tapering seriously and follow your physician’s instructions carefully. Depending on the situation, tapering can take anywhere from weeks to months as it requires a slow and steady approach.

A Good Person is a new film staring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman that is centred on a young woman in the depths of opioid addiction. Following an unimaginable tragedy, she forms an unlikely friendship with her would-be father-in-law, Daniel (played by Morgan Freeman) which gives her a fighting chance to put her life back together. In order to prepare for the part, Pugh spoke to numerous people who had suffered with opioid addiction which helped her understand the physicalities and the pain. What goes through their minds. What the actual struggle is about. “I think the best way to sum it up is (addiction) doesn’t choose. It can happen to anyone.”
