Ever heard of PNF stretching?

PNF stretching—short for Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation—is a powerful technique that enhances flexibility by combining gentle stretching with muscle activation. By alternating between stretching and contracting targeted muscles, it encourages the body to relax and release tension more effectively.

At Transcend Health and Well-Being, we incorporate PNF stretching into our evidence-based approach to treating tight lower back muscles—especially when tightness in the following areas is contributing:

• Hips
• Glutes
• Hamstrings
• Quads
• ITB (iliotibial band)

This technique not only helps improve range of motion but also boosts the effectiveness of remedial massage therapy. 💪

Fun Fact Friday!

Pandiculation!

Pandic-ul-what-now?

You may not be familiar with the term pandiculation, but if you have a pet, you’ve probably seen it before. Have you ever seen a cat stretch out its tummy? That’s pandiculation, and the cat is contracting its back and neck muscles. The closest thing to pandiculation that you may be familiar with is stretching, but pandiculation is so much more than that!

It differs greatly from static stretching (the lengthening of an isolated set of muscles). Pandiculation involves the contacting of a set of muscles, lengthening them slowly, and then contracting them again to a rest position. It’s an alternative to stretching, and far more relaxing, restorative, and beneficial.

How to Pandiculate? Well, you’re probably already doing it—yawning is a form of pandiculation! So is the classic ‘morning stretch’ you may have seen in the movies and even done yourself once the alarm goes off. Try giving it a go as soon as you wake up in the morning—contract your arms close to your body, raise them high above your head while you release and pause before continuing with your day.

Incorporate pandiculation into your daily routine and post-workout to help your muscles stay supple and reduce tightness and chronic pain.

Fun Fact Friday!

How can you tell the difference between tendon and muscle pain? Try applying a hot or cold pack!

((As a general rule and only for mild symptoms.))

Tendons generally suffer from friction and inflammation due to micro tears. When a heat pack is applied, the pain may get worse due to the inflammation. Tendon pain often occurs when muscles have been overstretched, or joints pushed beyond their normal range of motion. The pain you will feel can be sharper and more localised, and closer to your joints. Tendon pain will be relieved by a cold pack.

Muscles generally suffer from aching and soreness—they benefit from heat, and a heat pack will tend to relieve the pain. Muscle pain can show up as a general soreness and it can be hard to pinpoint the exact location of the source of the pain. Muscle pain is also more likely to occur between joints, rather than localised around a joint. A cold pack will not relieve muscles soreness.

If you need to relieve pain symptoms at home, remember tendon pain = cold pack; muscle pain = heat pack. If you are applying heat to a sore area, and the pain is getting worse, you likely have a tendon issue. Likewise, if you are applying cold to a sore area and the pain is getting worse, you likely have a muscular issue.

A course of Remedial Massage will help tendons and muscles heal faster rather than left alone, and in many cases one or two visits is all that is needed for muscle pain.

As always, this is just general advice for educational purposes.

About Us

Transcend Health and Well-Being was born from an age-old idea that a ‘Mind, Body and Spirit’ approach to health, will provide better and longer-lasting outcomes in treatment.

The Mind is responsible for thoughts, feelings, desires and is used as a tool. The Body is the physical vehicle for the Mind. The Spirit is an awareness of Mind, Body and the environment. All three are deeply connected and influence each other.

With this in mind, we provide an environment where massage isn’t just perceived as a physical treatment, but one that extends into the Spirit and Mind as well.

We use a range of treatments that can be utilised individually or combined to tailor a treatment plan that will yield the best results in the shortest time possible.
