Fear is the enemy of the labour room

Well that might be a bit dramatic, fear in the labour room is something to be aware of.

Nature has designed labour to slow or stall when we are in fight or flight mode.

It makes sense.

We don't want to be birthing when we feel that we are in danger.

We want to be somewhere safe for the baby to be safe.

Although there might not be in a unsafe environment, if we perceive danger our bodies respond the same way.

So what do you do if you are feeling scared for labour?

Education!

Understanding how your body function during labour and what you can do to support it can help you feel calmer.

HypnoBirthing teaches you how wonderful and capable the female body as well as heaps of labour comforts for use during birth.

Fear of the unknown!
Fear of not being strong enough/capable!
Fear of pain or discomfort!

Fear is not uncommon, many women experience it during their pregnancy. I certainly did.

Fear is normal with today's perception and understanding of birth and labour.

When we learn more about labour and the beautiful design that nature has gifted our bodies, we can let go of fear and begin trusting our body.

Letting go of that fear is a critical part of labour progressing. Fear will slow down labour.

Having fears about labour is okay, it's normal.

I can help you let go of fear and trust in your body.

The first step is education!

A positive anticipation of birth is key!

Mindset is a HUGE part of labour.

Your body is more than capable of birthing, you need to believe it and surrender to the process.

The female body is spectacular, it has everything it needs to birth already built in.

Endorphins (natural pain relievers), oxytocin (bonding, love, surges), relaxin (space creating, lubrication) and our intuitive knowledge (don't underestimate this one).

I could go on. Just know your body is incredible. It has grown a human - it can birth you baby!

Our bodies are perfectly designed to birth - when left uninterrupted!

When that design is interrupted with unnecessary intervention it is likely to cause a cascade of intervention.

Induction ⬇️
Artificial release of membrane (AROM) ⬇️
Epidural ⬇️
Emergency C-Section

It happens more than you think.

Consider everything an intervention including vaginal exams and monitoring.

I say this because any interruption or outside influence will interrupt your hormonal flow and your relaxation.

It is your hormones that drive your contractions, release natural pain killers and your bonding/love response.

Like always I suggest that you ask lots of questions of your care provider when they are suggesting interventions.

Make sure that it is right for you and you understand the risks and benefits before making a decision.

This is informed consent and you have the right to refuse anything,

It is your body!

An induction involves you giving over control of your birth to your health care provider.

When you are induced a synthetic hormone usually syntocinon is used to start and control the intensity of labour.

This compound looks a lot like oxytocin but it is not the same and doesn't function the same.

Once an induction has be started your health care provider will be in control of your dosage and monitor you constantly.

Hello uncomfortable wires bands and cannulas.

Once started you can't reverse an induction, you body isn't in control of the oxytocin production anymore.

Inductions are wonderful when there is a medical need to birth a baby before they are ready.

However they are often offered when were is no medical indication just a timeline that the hospital wants you to follow.

Make sure you are asking for more information if you are being encouraged to have an induction.

Ask lot of questions so that you can make the right decision for you and your family.

Due dates - more like guess dates!

Did you know there is a 2-week period where you can't possibly be pregnant included in the 40-week gestation period?

Sounds crazy - let me explain.

Time of conception is based on when your last period was. However, you don't fall pregnant until ovulation which is around day 14 of your cycle (if you have a 28-day cycle - every cycle is different).

So, there are roughly 2 weeks between your period and ovulation where you can't be pregnant.

Using our periods as a point of reference makes a lot of sense because it is easy to determine when it last occurred, ovulation is not so easy to determine.

There is such a huge amount of pressure put on these due dates. It's crazy!

A baby isn't truly overdue until after 42 weeks.

The average gestation period for a first-time mum is 41.3 weeks.

Keep this in mind if you are getting a lot of pressure to get that baby out.

Relax Mumma, your baby will come when they are ready.

Stay home as long as you can!

If you choose to birth in a hospital it is important that you spend as much time labouring at home as possible.

Labour tends to establish and continue best when we are in a familiar environment. For the early parts of labour and the most of active labour it's best to stay in the comfort of your own home.

Often when transfer to hospital labour will slow due to the change in environment. This is normal.

It is common for hospitals to start a clock when you are admitted. If your labour isn't progressing in the manner that the hospital expects interventions will be offered.

Hospitals are likely to monitor your progression with vaginal exams and fetal monitor, both interrupt the flow of labour.

Potential extending the length of labour and therefore interventions are more likely to be offered.

Stay at home as long as you can. You will labour beautifully there.

Women know how to birth - it is often the environment that lets them down!

I came across this quote while I was looking for templates on .

The quote stood out to me, it home for me.

Often it is the environment that a women birth's in that has a big impact on how the birth plays out.

During birth feeling safe and supported is critical to the progression of labour.

Labour is designed to slow or temporally stall when fear is present.

This is a wonderful biological function when there is a predator near by, not so much in a society that has been conditioned to believe that birth is dangerous and must be feared.

Everyone's idea of feeling safe is different and it is important you follow your own needs. For some homebirth is the best option for others its the hospital.

I'd love to hear what your safe birth environment looks like in the comments below
