What are ACEs?
ACEs = Adverse Childhood Experiences.

They’re difficult things children may go through while growing up, like family conflict, neglect, or living with stress in the home.

Research shows that the more ACEs someone has, the more likely they are to face challenges with health, relationships, and wellbeing later in life.

But here’s the good news:
ACEs are not destiny.

When children and adults are surrounded by safe, caring, and supportive relationships, the effects of ACEs can be buffered and healed.

Every caring adult has the power to make a difference. Sometimes, it’s the one safe relationship that helps a child thrive, even in tough times.

Did you know about ACEs before? What’s one small way you think adults can build safety and trust for children?

Hometown weekend vibes 🧡
No agenda. Just slowing down, soaking up the simple things, and feeling the love of my beautiful family. Just being grateful, even if it’s chilly outside.

Words matter.

Too often we hear phrases like:
“People like you who are mentally ill…
“People like you who are autistic…”
“People like you who are disabled…”

While often unintentional, this kind of language can feel like a label, a box, or even a judgment. It reduces a person to a diagnosis rather than recognising their whole self.

A trauma-informed approach asks us to pause and reframe.
Instead of “people like you,” we can say:
“People living with…”
“People who experience…”
“People with lived experience of…”

This small shift in words changes the message from othering to inclusion, respect, and dignity.

Because none of us are just one thing. We are more than our challenges, our diagnoses, or our pasts.

How do you prefer to hear language framed when it comes to diagnoses or lived experiences?

Safety comes first

It’s the foundation of trauma-informed practice. Without a sense of safety, trust and growth can’t happen for the people we support or for us as workers.

Here are three simple ways to strengthen safety in everyday practice:
• Predictability – explain what will happen next.
• Transparency – be clear about roles and boundaries.
• Respect – ensure “no” is always a safe option.

It sounds simple, but it’s not always easy in complex care settings. Small, consistent steps build the biggest impact.

Which of these do you already practice well — and which one would you like to strengthen in your work?
